What computer science classes are most useful for social science research?

  • What types of computer science and math classes are most helpful for modeling and data in the social science? I took a two-credit course in python last semester and am currently taking the first of two java-based introductory classes for computer science majors (though I'm not a computer science major). I've also had an introduction to R through a modeling class. Here's a few options, but I'm not sure I understand what each covers: CS 224: Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (Seems less Helpful) CS 255: Computer Organization/Assembly Programming (Seems less Helpful) CS 323: Data Structures and Algorithms (Seems Helpful) CS 377: Database Systems (Seems Fairly Helpful) MATH 212: Differential Equations (Seems somewhat related) MATH 345: Mathematical Modeling (Seems helpful)    MATH 346: Intro To Optimization Theory (Not Sure)     MATH 351: Partial Differential Equations (Not sure)

  • Answer:

I would think that you'd want enough programming to understand how the machine "thinks," enough data structures and algorithms to know how data are represented and manipulated, and enough database work to see how real-world systems are implemented to handle large data sets.  Mathematical Modeling, for sure.  I don't think you need CS 255.
