How can gotomeeting, mailchimp, constantcontact afford to have so many ads?

  • They seem to be on all sites, at all times. I get something like Netflix works because it appeals to so many and the price is low, but what about gotomeeting? How can they afford to run ads when display ads typically dont perform that well?

This is because they use remarketing. The ad is not displayed "on you tube", it's displayed specifically for you, because you previously clicked on an ad. It's very easy to setup in Adwords for example : just set a remarketing campaign with a duration in days. You can also define the "pressure" you want to apply. There are other networks dedicated to remarketing/retargeting. Note that if you use private browsing or delete your cookies, the remarketing will stop.
