Where to find a place near Berlin to rent a room for single?

What's the best (not too expensive) place to rent a small apartment/room in Berlin?

  • Answer:

With all due respect, do you realize that your question is way too subjective and consisting of terms possibly having completely different meanings for each individual, to be answered? Best - What is best according to you? A posh locality/In the middle of the city/away from the crowded city/close to hypermarkets/close to university etc.? Not too expensive - When I started as a student, even 300 Euros was expensive for me, and when we started working, a friend of mine considered an apartment worth 700 to be cheap. I would assume the limit of 500 Euros per month is not too expensive (though not cheap as well). Small apartment/room - 20 sq. mtrs. is small but enough for a single person according to me. You may consider anything less than 50 sq. mtrs. small for an apartment. Now I'll stop being a jerk, and try to answer your question with the above points in mind. Berlin is a relatively big city with many districts, all of which are partly or fully residential. Understandably, the rents are higher closer to the city center (Mitte district) than they are further away in some cases (e.g. Wedding). I'm not sure if you're aware or accepting of the WG (flat-share) concept here, where you can rent a room in a multi-room apartment and get great deals, along with nice company to live with. You have your own room, and share the kitchen, bathroom and in some cases, the living room. You can get a room in a WG for 300-400 Euros in almost any district Berlin (yes, even the most expensive ones). The only problem is that the competition is huge (yes, competition!) and there are thousands of students, interns, tourists, even professionals, jostling for nice WG rooms in good districts. Mitte, Prenzluer Berg (center-east), Friedrichshain (east), Kreuzberg (south) are some nice districts if you want to be surrounded with tons of cafes, bars, restaurants, clubs. First 2 are quite close to the city center as well. Rents could be 450+ for a WG room, or 600+ for a 40 sq. mtr. apartment in Mitte/Prenzluaer Berg, and a little less in the other two. Wedding is not as chique, but offers great deals for the location (a bit north of center) and amenities around. Wedding and Kreuzberg/Neukolln are melting pots of immigrant scene in Berlin as well. Rents would be 300+ for a WG room, or 450+ for a 40 sq. mtr. apartment West Berlin - Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf - is a bit pricey, but very nice area to live in. Rents would be 300-400+ for a WG room, or 500+ for a 40 sq. mtr. apartment. These are some of the areas which have quick accessibility to most of the city. There are many other far off areas which are great as well, and less expensive. Just that you may spend more time commuting, and find them relatively quieter. If you have more specific queries, let me know.

Other answers

I have to agree with Naveen, but some districts which are recognized as the nicest are Prenzlauerberg and Kreuzberg.  In Kreuzberrg there are three different areas to live as well though depending in you want trendy, cheap or fancy.
