What features should a CVB / DMO include in an iPhone app?
-
Destinations...CVBs / DMOs...are attempting to claim their niche within the crowded travel / tourism iPhone app field. From a consumer / tourist perspective, what features should a CVB iPhone app include for you to use it?
-
Answer:
I guess the question is what can CVB's DMO's offer that isn't already addressed by other platforms (Yelp, Foursquare, etc) to grab users screen space. Do they have proprietary information or offers that no one else has access to? Or does it make more sense for these org's to reach out to existing large scale platforms to find out ways to partner with them without shouldering the burden of development cost? Not really an answer.

An integrative experience leveraging off the Yelp/Gowalla/Foursquare/Google etc. available information. They shouldn't try to be the destination information aggregator, but integrator. Biran and Evan hit it. What isn't being told, uncovered by the already proliferating app experiences. Finally - reward loyalty like Groupon - consistently great and exclusive offers and rooted in unique content that's being overlooked by MSM or social conversation.

The biggest missing pieces from most DMO apps are (1) an editorial layer (the good stuff) and (2) ability for users to contribute back into the app, since the DMO's goal is to promote the destination, they should be offering a way for the app user to promote the destination. Our apps do both of these things.

Map and near me feature are important and giving them information that they can't get from Yelp, Foursquare, etc. Utilize video and audio as well. I have a quick demo of a city based iphone app here http://www.mycitymobileapp.com

I think using layers, being able to show the visitor exactly what's around them and giving them access to coupons that could be used at places near them is important. When I am in a new city, I always want to know where to eat/drink/what there is to do, and I think the app should answer those questions with an interactive experience.
