What are job opportunities in India after an MS degree from an Ivy League school vs. after the Indian Engineering Service?
-
I will be graduating from an IIT in a year. Being a mechanical engineer, I want to work in a highly core(or tech) oriented job. The placements are highly skewed to non-core jobs which I don't like. Hence my options are : 1. MS/PhD : My resume (and CGPA) and previous year's info suggest that I can quite easily get an admit from an Ivy league school for MS / PhD. But I do want to come back to India within 5-6 years (and definitely not as an academia). 2. I'm also inclined to choose the option of IES(Indian Engineering Service) as it is highly tech oriented. And doing service to the society has always been a charm for me. The problem with MS in an Ivy league school is the number of job options that are available in India that might restrict me to come back to India. Are there any other options available ? Does MS in an Ivy league school fetch fatty jobs in India ? Is IES worth a shot ? Will IES provide challenging opportunities ? PS : Money is a serious matter of discussion if an MS in Ivy league school doesn't guarantee high-pay jobs in India. (Assuming that IES is less paid compared to the average jobs that an MS return might expect)

Answer:
I work in an PSU I want you look at my other answer Please do look in this answer too I also asked my Ex IES friend to answer this question. When I told him that I am inclining towards IES he told me Do not join IES because you will half the salary you got just around 20K (Around 2 year back) and their will be a lot of political pressure and you will not be able to waht you want. So I suggest MS.

DISCLAIMER: This may not necessarily give any job opportunity statistics, but a different approach to a similar problem. Also I am not necessarily touching IES, because I believe that Entrepreneurship is more needed than IES. I hope it is not downvoted. My dear friend, I am no saint, I am no wise man. But I can think of what you are going through now. And this is a constant thought that hits me daily. So lets see if I can help you to some extent or not. Being from an IIT with a mechanical engineering degree, you are amongst the group of elite minds of India. Congratulations on that. The very fact that you hail from the top notch brand of engineers paves a great future for you. Open your arms and embrace it. Now, after all the glory, lets come back to the real world. Are you only interested in jobs? You say you are excited to work for the people, you said you like tech work, you said you wanted to study further, you said you wanted to earn handsomely. It all is achievable, and I guess you just need to shirk the concept of job. India is in dire need of entrepreneurs who work in segments apart from the services industry. Entrepreneurship is a way where you can work through all the desires of yours and in the end also pay yourself and the nation. How can you go about it? Well, first step could be taken right away, or after MS/PhD Degree from Ivy League universities. As is my case, I chose the second route. I am studying at a prestigious university (not bragging!!) in US and my reason to fly out was to:- 1. Grow my vision 2. Add on to the experience I gained by working for two years in industry (gave me an insight of what was missing and what should be added) 3. Look out for solutions to missing links (yes, most of it is already in use here. We only need to wither carry it back or develop for India) 4. Make international links 5. And study :| In this quest, I am doing nothing special, but being observant. I have picked up a lot of things that can be brought to India soon, or can be developed or have got a new dimension to my thinking to a certain problem. Big talks, right? Well, I love dreaming. I now plan to work for a year to learn the practicality of the solutions and its feasibility in India. And then, as I think time is right, I would head back and , if fortune favors, work on a start-up. Looks like a dream to me. But it is still achievable. I think you too can consider a similar route. Don't stop yourself because of the fiscal aspects or jobs. Your IIT degree is enough to keep you well off all through your life. And for the money, well I believe that you will make all that your destiny has for you. So relax and work, leave the rest to the maker of this universe. Create something, create jobs for people, create wealth for yourelf and the country, create India! Cheers!!
