What do you think is a possessional looking font for a web application?

Should I get a home Server or vServer for web application development?

  • I'm looking for a solution for my web application development. Currently  I'm testing my web apps on my webspace which supports PHP5.5 and MySQL  which is fine, but I'm doing some other things too, lately. So I want to  have a own linux machine.Would you recommend to get a own home server  like the HP ProLiant Micro Server N54L or better rent a virtual server? I  like having full control of what's happening when I think of getting a  home server.

  • Answer:

If you're really keen on running a Linux-based development environment and your development workstation is reasonably modern, I'd recommend getting started with something like http://www.vagrantup.com/ which gives you access to project-specific local virtual machines.  The website has great documentation including a step-by-step http://docs.vagrantup.com/v2/getting-started/index.html section that would probably have you up and running in under an hour.

A separate machine on your local network is great, even better is one with 4 cores, 16Gb memory and running the free version of VMware so you can divide it up in to testing and staging server, but you don't have to go that far, a virtual machine on your existing machine (laptop or desktop) can suffice. Or look at http://www.wampserver.com or https://www.mamp.info if you don't want the whole Linux learning curve. A Virtual Private Server is a good thing in the medium term but can take time to get to grips with.

I know about that methods but I want to keep my server processes away from my existing machine. There is enough knowledge to set up a linux based server as I'm a linux user but I'm not really sure what the advantages are for both.
