What is a good paying job in the computer industry?

How do I land a good paying job as a fresh computer science graduate?

  • Here is the situation. I'm about to graduate from Bangalore. (Bachelors in Computer Applications). I got a couple of job offers from IT companies through campus placements. These are mostly core technical jobs. But the problem is, the salaries are too less. I can't imagine myself earning INR 16-18000 per month in this economy. And frankly, I consider myself much beyond my peers in terms of technical knowledge in IT and computers. I have extremely specialized knowledge in the IT security field. I maintain a blog(reasonable traffic everyday), published a couple of research papers, read lots of books and ebooks on the topic, practice my skills, and I even developed a few projects, both academic and personal projects. I have even been contacted a few times for contractual work even as a student. Am I naive to think that I deserve more? How do I get a higher paying job when most companies don't look beyond your degree if you are a fresh graduate? I'm doing everything I know is good for me. Career experts and HR people, please answer. Update: I have been freelancing for the last several months too. From http://elance.com, the problem is that I have to keep looking for contracts once my previous job is done.

If what you said is true, it sounds like the best way for you to get a higher paying job is to learn to sell yourself and negotiate. When someone gives you an offer, learn how to give a competent return offer.

Do you know anyone who work in any of the big companies? If yes, ask him to refer you to that company. If not, message me your mail id, give me a few months.

A slightly less risky way: Earn a reputation for your technical and programming skills, outside of the degree, by participating and winning competitions such as those in http://www.topcoder.com/ and other similar ones. You may do this, while having taken up a low income job.
