How many bones are in a human skull?

I would answer that the skull (cranium + mandible) has twenty-eight (28) bones and that is because I would include the ossicles of the ear.  I would also use slightly different terminology for some of the bones so my list would be: Frontal bone Parietal bone (2) Temporal bone (2) Occipital bone Sphenoid bone Ethmoid bone Mandible Maxilla (2) Palatine bone (2) Zygomatic bone (2) Nasal bone (2) Lacrimal bone (2) Vomer bone Inferior nasal conchae (2) Malleus (2) Incus (2) Stapes (2) (Gosh, I had been staring at this question for ages trying to figure out  why my answer was different and I am glad that I finally figured it out.)

According to Moore's Clinical it's 23. The skull consists of the neurocranium and the viscerocranium. Neurocranium has eight. (1 ethmoid bone, 1 frontal bone, 1 occipital bone, 2 parietal bones, 1 sphenoid bone, 2 temporal bones. And there is 15 in the viscerocranium. (1 mandible, 1 ethmoid, 1 vomer) and bilateral pairs of (maxillae, inferior nasal conchae, zygomatic, palatine, nasal and lacrimal)  And if you count the ossicles like you said then that would make 29 "technically" though I think most consider them within the middle ear and thus separate from the skull.
