Why do people think that crime is more prevalent today than say in 1992?
-
When all crime rates are down today compared with 1992, yet the average person will probably say crime is worse today. I believe this is due to several reasons: 1. Typically a brand new housing development will not have much crime, however as time goes on newer neighborhoods become more desirable. Therefore, people who can move out and inevitably lower income people move in. So crime goes up over time in particular neighborhood and therefore people that have lived there for decades see an increase in their particular pocket of the world. All the while crime overall is actually declining. 2. Crime reports by the media. Some will say the the media will focus on crime stories for the sake of ratings. However, what I think has happened is that in the age of the internet, news media now have MORE avenues to report crime. For example, child abduction is down 80% since the 1980s. However, most people will say that child abduction is a bigger problem today. The fact is that there were more abductions in the 1980s, but with only news being reported to the public through: newspapers, 6 o'clock news, and nightly national news, news media only reported on the very sensational abduction cases. Whereas, today the news media not only have those same avenues but also they now have the internet with all of it's avenues, we also have 24 hour news coverage today as well. So basically, people just simply are INFORMED about more abductions. When in 1980s there was actually more abductions occurring, but we were only informed about a handful of them. Whereas today, there are ONLY a handful of abductions that occur, but we are informed about ALL of them. So this gives people the sense that there are more abductions today vs. the 1980s. This is true with all crimes. Think about it, in the 80s and 90s we only got our news through: print media, local TV news usually only a half hour, and nightly national news again usually only a half hour. This forced news media to be very conservative as to what they would report and what they would not. For they had a very limited amount of time(TV) and space(print) to give us the news. Therefore, a lot of crime went un-reported. However today, the news media not only still has those old avenues of print and TV. They now have the internet. That alone provides 100s of more avenues to report the news:Their own news website, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, blogs, etc. Then we also have 24 hour news channels as well, which are able to handle news stories that you would have gotten from your local news in times past. Think about this, with 24 hours news stations like Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc. your local news station NO LONGER HAS to deliver any national news stories to you and what we see today is that local news stations now focus MORE on local news stories. You see before in order to be competitive with other local news stations, they would report on more national news forgoing many local news stories. So much local crime went unreported. Whereas today, they now report on more local crime. Again, people are just hearing about more crime, it is not that there is more crime actually being committed. This is what is called "observation bias" or The effect of suddenly noticing things that were not noticed previously â and as a result wrongly assuming that the frequency has increased. 3. People tend to have "Rosy Retrospection", that is they remember the past as having been better than it really was. It is common to hear people say, "things were so much better back in the day", or "I remember when things were much simpler".

Answer:
Because we live in an age of social media, where we know everything that happens at the very moment it happens. Therefore, because of this, it seems as if crime is much more prevalent. Not to mention that crime reports bring in higher view rating for news channels, so they are constantly showing this type of media.
