What kind of background do I need for a marketing job, in emerging markets, for a large CPG company like Proctor & Gamble?
-
My dream job is to pilot products in emerging markets for a great CPG company. For example, P&G used lean startup methods to create a market for Tide in India. I don't have the traditional background that most marketers at P&G have. I have 14 years' marketing experience, but just 4 years in CPG marketing, for a niche brand. I was a GM and the brand achieved record-setting growth, but it's a small brand. I don't have an MBA. Do l have any chance? Answer:
You won't have a chance if you don't apply, that's for sure. In my 7 years at P&G, I worked with people from all kinds of professional backgrounds - former soldiers, teachers, scholars, athletes, as well as many MBAs. Some were great, some weren't. P&G is looking for people who can lead, collaborate with others, understand consumers, and generate new ideas. The world has changed. P&G's struggling to grow revenue. Operating in the same old ways won't get the company the new ideas that it needs to drive sales. Having a "traditional background" often isn't a strength any more. So, give it a shot. One more pro tip: make sure you spell Procter correctly in your cover letter even though you didn't do so in the question :)

Marketing job, in Procter & Gambles's dictionary, is a more rounded definition. It includes brand building (things you can imagine like advertising, media, PR events, package design, etc.) and also business management, which involves more channel/in-store strategy and execution. Moreover, P&G doesn't request knowledge for brand building and business management, instead providing sufficient training to every employee. However, it does request strong leadership, innovative thinking, agility to changes, etc. Most of the requirements are not hard skill but soft ones. So, make sure you apply and demonstrate your potential.
