What is a gps card?

Where can I buy a vehicle GPS tracker which does not need a SIM card on it?

  • I am looking for a Chinese manufacturer of GPS trackers without SIM card. I looked at alibabaDOTcom but I am confused about the product. The title of the product shows "....without sim card" but in the features list it's showing "GSM band 900/1800..." etc.. If you know about SIM less GPS tracker please share a link for buy.

  • Answer:

What is your budget? GPS trackers using SIM cards tend to be your cheapest option, but there are others that rely on satellite connection only but they are more expensive e.g.: https://www.atlastrax.com/index.php?route=product%2Fproduct&product_id=71

When you say "GPS Tracker", let's define it first what you mean by it. I presume you mean a GPS signal receiver that can also transmit its own position (received position of latitude and logitude) to another receiver wirelessly. By this definition, a standalone GPS receiver does not tranmit its own location to another device. Most Garmin, Magellan, Tom Tom GPS recievers are like stand alone GPS receiver devices. Therefore, a "GPS Tracker" consists of two parts; 1) A GPS receiver and 2) another radio (a transciver; a radio that can transmit as well as recieve a signal). The GPS receiver cannot transmit. It can only receive its own location data from the satellite constellation in space. There are four different ways a GPS receiver is generally paired with the #2 radio (transciver) 1) A satellite radio such as Iridium that can communicate  with other Iridium radios via satellite 2) Your humble smartphone through licensed frequency spectrum as your smartphone contains both GPS receiver chip and cellular radio 3) Connecting a stand alone GPS receiver to a transciver radio (such as your smartphone or satellite phone) via bluetooth and 4) Other radios that can transmit and receive through "unlicensed" frequency spectrum such as ISM/Ham radio etc., and Since licenced spectrum costs billions of dollars, cellular providers have implemented SIM mechanism (Subcriber Information Module - which contains information about you and your account with the network so they can bill you) to charge you for the data transmission by the minutes or even seconds. Both, #1  #2 and #3 above will charge you regardless of actual presence of a SIM card. Only option you have is to buy a tracker that uses ISM or FRS spectrum.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISM_band or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Mobile_Radio_Service But for your immediate gratification, check this out https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/Rino/into-sports/cIntoSports-bBRAND476-p1.html There may be similar models by Magellan and Tom Tom also but I am not aware of this. Hope this helps.

My question is why do you not want a SIM card GPS tracking device? They give you more options of devices and available networks to select from. We have some manufacturers that offer GSM devices operating on the AT&T network that do not require SIM cards starting at $135 USD.  If you are still in the market, contact me for details http://Equiptrac.com/contact

Some of the cheapest versions on Amazon sell without SIM card, so will be without GPSR.   Otherwise you can get an M2M sim card for cheap monthly fees.

I have a feeling that you must have SIM card. How else you connect it to Internet?
