What is the car in the Top Gear starting?

Which top gear episode would be a good starting point for some one who's not big a car enthusiast?

  • I was trying to find an episode where there weren't references to past episodes (e.g. In season 10 episode 9 before going out to a 24h race the presenters mention growing crops for bio diesel in season 9 episode 5), so the viewer wouldn't feel lost or that they were missing out. Also, it would be nice if the episode isn't one of the landmark ones because it would be nice to have the viewer be continually further impressed as they keep continuing one with the series.

  • Answer:

Season 12, Episode 8: Vietnam Special. One of my all time favourite episodes. Two of my close friends got hooked to Top Gear after I showed them that episode. And neither of them is too big on cars.

The first Top Gear episode I saw was the India Special (17x07). I saw the episode after a bunch of sitcoms and it made me laugh the hardest. Now I watch the show regularly and I have even watched nearly all the previous episodes. Usually, the specials don't contain references (none I can recollect at the moment). They are stand-alone episodes (some times in 2 parts) and don't contain other segments (like Star in a Reasonably Priced Car or the News). So all the specials would definitely be a good starting point. EDIT: I know you are asking for non-specials, but I think the specials are a really good way to get started, especially for someone who is not a car enthusiast. The specials are less focused on the cars and more on the scenarios, the terrain, the challenges and the buffoonery. My personal favorite is the Middle-East special.

In general, the specials are more accessible for viewers aren't car enthusiasts. I usually introduce Top Gear to new people with either the Vietnam Special or the Botswana Special.  Oliver!

"Any", I immediately thought when reading this question. I don't remember what episode was the first one I saw, I just know that it wasn't any "Special" one and I loved it, and I didn't know much about cars or motoring, not that I'm an expert now either.

I have never seen a similar pattern of operation even with their set tests and reviews. Best to start with the episode for your fab car and tale it from there

I think series 8, episode 3 with amphibious cars is a great place to start. That's how I got my entire family hooked on the show :). It's not a special, so it has the usual structure, but it also doesn't depend heavily on any previous shows. And the challenge is simultaneously absolutely hilarious and deeply creative—they built and amphibious car with a sail! You can follow this up with series 10, episode 2 which features similar amphibious cars, now crossing the Channel. Hilarious and flows well with the previous episode.
