How much money can a make-shift/real ice-cream truck make in the summer of 2014?

  • You may be curious as to what I mean by 'make-shift' ice-cream truck: My parents friend has a truck, and I thought maybe we could get an agreement and install coolers and a freezer for the summer. I'd love to sell ice-cream and other snacks. I'm 13, so of course no drivers license yet so I'll have my brothers drive the truck.  I'm curious as to how much money this can generate. Raw numbers will be appreciated. PS: Do people respond to female ice-cream truckers the same as male ice-cream truck drivers? The majority (the majority? No, actually I've never seen an ice-cream lady) of people whom I see in ice-cream trucks are male, so that's something I'm a little worried about.

It depends on what country you're in. In the US, the state governments are going to require some sort of health certificate for your truck and a business license. You may need a separate food-truck license. Of course, you're also going to need commercial insurance on your truck. After these costs are taken care of, you can then think about buying your stock. If you're in a country that does not require licensing and health certification, your up-front costs are likely to be lower. As notes, location is important. Some are ideal, like beaches, outside sporting events, near popular parks. If you're going to be driving through residential neighborhoods, you'll do better where there are lots of young children rather than, say, retirees.
