Anyone had experience with online colleges?

What are my chances of getting in US top colleges for an MBA with a GMAT score of 730?

  • I have done BTech in Electronics and Communication engineering from a decent college in India and presently working in a Data Analytics and Decision Sciences firm. I have a work experience of 2 years and my work profile is something like below: 1) Worked as an analyst for a Fortune 5 company helping them to launch their promotions effectively and gauging their impact using data and statistical models 2) Helped an online retail giant to gauge the impact of its online marketing promotions 3) Developed a data collection, storing and analysing framework for using machine learning to predict the behavior of an industrial unit using an android application I also have cleared CFA level 2 examination. Also I plan to have 1 more year of work experience. Can anyone please suggest which all colleges i might target based on my profile?

  • Answer:

You have got a great GMAT score, more than averages at most schools. You are building a decent work experience in your present line of work. The average work experience at top B-Schools in US are in range of 4-5 years. To decide on your question of which schools to apply, you should first consider your career targets and that will help you in deciding which schools to apply. Industry that you want to work in (for e.g. Financial Services, Consulting, Retail, Consumer Products etc) Function you want to work in (for e.g. Finance, Analytics, Marketing etc) Location- which area of US your want to work in (e.g. New York City in Northeast, Chicago in Midwest or Silicon Valley in US-West) Look for schools offering best career opportunities in these areas and also have a Salary Vs Cost comparison to see which schools fall in your budget. This would help in deciding the best B-Schools for your profile & career targets. To get more clarity, you may want to visit this following link & decide for yourself:https://www.collegedice.com/template/career/career.php

The question really isn't what colleges you can target , rather which colleges you want to target. Since you have gotten your gmat out of the way, you can now focus on the more important work ( Yes ! Its true) Before you proceed take some time to answer the following questions. 1. Why do you want to pursue an mba? 2. What do you really want to do ? Where do you see yourself in five years.  Your next course of action should be as follows 1. Choose a field of specialization - marketing , finance, sales , human resources etc 2. Research schools, departments and faculty based on your chosen field of specialization. >you can use the ranking system as a reference ( make sure you cross reference department level ranking as well) >Scrutinize the course content , understand the style of education , practical exposure and ascertain whether this matches with your expectations. >Reach out to alumni , current students and faculty to get feedback. >Check the placement reports specific to your chosen specialization. Many of these reports can be misleading. Dig deep. Based on this research shortlist 3-5 colleges. The distribution should be 1 high aim school , 3 target schools and 1 safe school. 3.  With the short list in hand , register for pre application events and virtual seminars. This is important as it conveys your dedication and commitment to the adcom. 4.Start writing essays. This will take time. Target the first application deadline for at least 3 schools. (Sep 2015). This is crucial. A good essay takes anywhere between 1 to 3 months. Work , rework and rework again.  Do NOT reuse essays. >Start by writing essays for the following 3 questions  1. Why MBA  2. What are your short term goals / long term goals.  3. Why this school /department ? (Research from step 2 is crucial for this) >Next pick the essays for each school. You have started your mba admission preparation at the correct time. 6 to 7 months should be good enough. Good luck to you ! P.s - The MBA from a reputed US university is not cheap. Make sure you have your finances in place ( Approx cost >90 lakhs INR,without scholarships ) P.p.s - Many people hire a consultant for essay analysis. I don't really recommend it. However it is important to keep your options open.
