What is the best CRM to use for tracking job applicants?
-
We are looking for a CRM that allows us to easily view lists of candidates for specific fields (web dev, sales, research, etc...) and their statuses (interviewing, rejected, waiting for reply, have not yet reached out to, etc...). We are using excel right now to track, but are looking for a more robust solution.

We've spoken with hundreds of companies about what ATS platforms they use and what their experience has been with whatever they are using. Here's generally what we hear from people in terms of what they like (Note: Very few people we've talked to love their ATS. It's truly a source of pain for many individuals). Very early stage startups - If an early stage startup is even using an ATS the names we hear a bunch are Resumator (http://www.theresumator.com/) and SmartRecruiters (http://www.smartrecruiters.com/), in part because they are free or very low-cost. A good number of early-stage companies are also attempting to use Salesforce for applicant tracking although we typically hear mixed things on this front. Early to medium stage startups - If a company is a bit more mature we hear JobScore (http://www.jobscore.com/) and Jobvite (http://recruiting.jobvite.com/) quite a bit (with Jobvite being the leader here). People tend to like the social recruiting features of Jobvite and JobScore wins points for its candidate "sharing" feature (which does turn some people off entirely from the product). Later stage startups - Later stage tends to be very fragmented as there are over 300+ ATS providers that we've identified and what ATS system a company is using is often highly dependent on when a company started. The name we hear more than any other here is Taleo (http://www.taleo.com/) although there tends to be a lot of disdain for the Taleo user experience. Edge cases - There are of course specialized needs within the ATS world. For example, the needs of recruiters at an agency tend to be different from the needs of internal recruiters. For agencies we often hear Bullhorn (http://www.bullhorn.com/) and MaxHire (http://www.maxhire.net/). Bullhorn is used by a lot of internal recruiting departments as well. In addition, many people want something that's more of a "recruiting CRM" than an ATS. Here we end up seeing Avature (http://www.avaturecrm.com/) used quite a bit. Avature in particular seems to handle the needs of organizations that have large sourcing departments and want a separate system to manage "pre-ATS CRM" needs. Finally, make sure to keep an eye on LinkedIn and the Saleforce platform in the next year or two. LinkedIn is bringing its Talent Pipeline (http://talent.linkedin.com/talentpipeline/) platform to market and Salesforce has a number of companies who are vying to build the leading ATS for AppExchange. JobScience (http://www.jobscience.com/) seems to be the company we hear most about at this point. Hopefully this is helpful. I've left a lot of solid companies off of this list so the absence of anyone doesn't mean they might not be a great fit. I just wanted to relay what we're seeing after a lot of conversations on the topic. Finally, note that the majority of our conversations are with companies on the West Coast of the U.S. so there is certainly an unintended bias here because of that. Update on 7/14/13: We're posting a series of blog posts on this very topic. Here's the first one that we posted to the Entelo blog this week: http://blog.entelo.com/overview-of-applicant-tracking-systems-for-smb/ Enjoy!

I hope this helps. You can use Basecamp and manage your interview / tracking process as a project. You can set up several tasks and milestones that candidates have to complete and you will be alerted once they are done so that you can verify and then choose the best.

I'd suggest that the best tool for this is coincidently named http://theapplicants.com we're making a video for them at the moment which should be finished soon and thus have learned a lot about their product. It works exactly as you describe and is used by companies such as OMGPOP and TechCrunch Disrupt.
