What sites are there that are like wikipedia?

What operating system do various internet sites like Google, Amazon, eBay, Apple, Facebook, Zynga, Twitter, LinkedIin, PayPal, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Groupon, Quora, Netflix etc. use on their production servers?

  • Each site is most likely using a separate OS. Add a response even if you know what one or a few of them use.

  • Answer:

It is fair to say that nearly every Internet site—including Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Twitter—runs Linux, with the obvious exception of Microsoft's various properties.

LinkedIn uses a combination of Linux and Solaris.

There are reports, as old as 2000-2001 that even Microsoft itself does indeed use or has used Linux as well. It is well known that MS uses or has used Linux for its:   nameservers   firewalls and network protection   indirectly through Akamai for web content serving. Here are some references, from several different years,  to this fact. http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2003/08/17/wwwmicrosoftcom_runs_linux_up_to_a_point_.html http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/4962   Update, these two links not working anymore, they did when I first wrote this answer: http://mediakey.dk/~cc/microsoft-is-using-linux/ http://www.informationweek.com/news/13100775

It may surprise most, but many of those companies listed above do make use of Solaris. There are a few major retailers and banks that folks use all the time that run on Solaris. The big issue for netcraft and other tools out there, is that you can modify your http or app server to give a different platform type in the strings. I've seen several that have modified thier http or app server strings to say OS's such as Windows to obscure the actual platform the site is running on. This is done as a security measure. The subject gets more interesting when you're talking about back-end systems. This is where you'll find Solaris and AIX doing the heavy lifting for databases, data warehouses, BI, ERP, CRM, etc. None of that is visible from the web :)

Obviously there is no single operating system everyone is using. However, most large sites make extensive use of Unix operating system like Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris (OpenSolaris). I am not sure any single person can tell you the servers used by your entire list, but Facebook and Google are using Linux in production for sure.

Try searching for the sites on http://BuiltWith.com. Sometimes it will be able to determine the OS, more often it can figure out the webserver.
