How much will Tesla be a game changer in the US car industry? What about the energy industry?
-
I see Tesla in the press a LOT, and most of the articles seem to be raving. I also see Elon Musk being compared to Henry Ford. As far as I can tell, they seem posed to really shake up the automotive, car dealership, battery technology, energy, and utility industries. Is the press exaggerating with articles like these? Where do you see Telsa headed in a decade or so? Answer:
I believe the impact will be enormous. They are a fast growing electric car company with a clear line of sight to profitability. Five years ago, I don't believe most people, including myself, would have predicted their performance as a company. Yes, they make a high end vehicle, but they clearly have their eyes on reducing cost and entering the mainstream. Their investment in the brand and core technology will pay off and allow them to do this. Barring some major product issues, I believe they will be a top 5 auto manufacturer in the US in less than a decade.

The only article I've seen mentioning Tesla recently was in the Los Angeles Times, talking about how annoyed California is that Tesla is going to build their new plant in Texas -- the company apparently likes to play the host site incentives off each other.

Change comes from the fringes and work their way to the center. I don't think Tesla will be as big as a GM or a Toyota, but the influence from the frontier is currently being felt in the Capitol. This simple act of influencing the dominant players means that Tesla is already very important. As for the energy industry, I don't think so, at least for the short term they are not big enough to change the existing paradigm in transportation fuels or commercial electrical power production.
