What are virtual product sampling tools/products in market? To what extent are they used by product manufacturers?

• By sampling here I mean, after you design a product you get samples of that product. Samples give you feedback in terms of corrections needed in look and feel and other usability factors (More detailed explanation at end of question). One of tools I know which many retailers use is Scene7, do you any other tools for such work? Do companies use virtual sampling of product to that extent? The basic idea of virtual sampling is that you create a image in authoring software such as Adobe Illustrator which has multiple parts as per BOM. The authored file can be applied colors and materials (Which are again images from pallets). The applied colors and materials to image give real look and feel of the product, which is the virtual sample. Various combinations of sample can be created easily  without much effort through software, so cost of getting samples for various combination is saved, and is a big plus from time saving perceptive for product development. The virtual samples thus created for can be used by other systems in lifecycle of product, and a physical sample may be ordered at a really late stage.
