Is 8 - 9 A* good enough at the GCSE level to study computer science at Oxford or Cambridge University? (I know that A-levels matter as well)
-
I know that A-levels are important as well but in terms of GCSE, would this put me in a good position when applying for Oxford or Cambridge University.

Answer:
Yes absolutely, if you keep a similar kind of grade quality up during your As and A Levels then this will stand you in a good position but remember there are other factors taken into account such as extra curricular activities and performance in interview should you be requested for one. Best of luck!

They're good results, but probably almost irrelevant. A-levels/interview are what really seems to matter, in my experience. Good luck!

It is a very good GCSE record for any subject. But many other factors are taken into account.

As a current Oxford computer science student: lol they're fine. Do not worry about those GCSE grades.

Not computer science, but I did natural sciences at Cambridge with 7A*, 2As and a B. A levels, AS results, other stuff you've done and the interview are all v. important. As an aside, I don't think GCSE results are a great predictor of eventual degree grade. Pretty certain that the best predictor is AS scores - so work hard in the lead up to applying!

It's good enough to apply, but not good enough to guarantee a place. The problem is that pretty much every UK student who applies will have such GCSE grades... ... and each summer, the newspapers are full of stories about students with all A* grades at A-level who haven't got in. With only about 60 people admitted across CS per year (and that includes Maths/CS and Phil/CS joint degrees), there's a huge amount of competition. So, apply, but don't think that your GCSE grades are "enough" to get in.

Your grades are fine. If you are thinking about applying to Oxford, I recommend you take some practice MAT tests and if you score more than 60 points you will probably get an interview. I think the MAT is a much better predictor of your success. https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/study-here/undergraduate-study/maths-admissions-test https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/system/files/attachments/Mathsgroup%20feedback%202014.pdf
