Is there a software or service for converting a bitmap image of a printed page to a non-bitmap PDF?
-
I have scanned a paper book into a PDF but it's really just a bunch of images of pages. I'm looking for a way to convert this huge PDF into a normal PDF where the text content is actual text rendered with fonts, and not just bitmap images. The goal is to reduce the file size without compromising fidelity to the original document. In principle, it seems technically possible for software to extract glyphs from the numerous samples in the bitmaps and then construct fonts from them to be used in the output PDF.

Answer:
I guess the OCR(Optical Character Recognition) tools could help you do such jobs. It could help to identify the text from the images and save them. After that, there is the only job to convert the text to PDF format.

Your problem is very genuine, and you basically want to have a scanned image turned into a textual pdf file. Well, its a complicated situation. Firstly I would simply advise you to install the ClassicPDF editor (http://www.classicpdf.com/). And then follow the steps: 1) Open scanned pdf file in classicPDF. 2) Go to edit and click 'move/resize' in image tab, and export the picture (whole document will look as picture as you have scanned document) to picture format out of the pdf file. 3) Search for OCR(optical character recognition) software and use it to read the text from your exported images. It will do so and give you result in an MS word format. Make your changes in it, and then you can convert it back to PDF. 4) However if you need to make some slight changes to the document, its easy and just open your file in classicPDF editor, click insert text and then click where you want to make changes, you will get a text box, write in it, and when you are done with editing, save it. The box will overwrite what was beneath it. There is a bit complication involved but this actually involves the conversion of image to text, which can be done through OCR only. If you have problem with the large size of image, then you can simply extract the images out of pdf using the move image tool of classic PDF and then change its format and size and then put back into the PDF File.
