What job should I have?

As a person with Asperger's, what are some suggestions to make my job interviews easier?

  • What should I do and not do? Basically I never cared much about the job market till like 2years ago, and starting trying getting a job and go to interviews since this year when my family needed extra income, and I decided to leave university 1year and half ago because debts on my family were going sky high so I felt like that was a big burden to my family. At the beginning I just did a normal search on jobs on my zone, etc but the problem is all these factories have intermediary people in this case people who hire for these companies which seems kinda annoying, since they are even more selective and picky. I decided by making a normal Curriculum vitae, doesnt have much on it just the basic since I didnt wanted to add stuff I couldnt like many people think its the way to go and write stuff they can do and aint the truth, plus I didnt had post experience on any job since I never had one, at that point I felt it was ok just like that. Managed to go to three interviews at that point, however in first two I said the problem I had, I dunno it felt like the right thing to do, you will tell me why you did such, well I think if the person is going to hire me, it should know my problem so we make each other life easier and less stressful, and I should be honest to the person that hires me since that person is gonna pay me a salary every month and there should be the decency to be honest to the person hiring you, instead of being a fag that tries to butt lick his boss arse because I find that shit annoying plus I aint able to do that or at least sounds the wrong thing to do. My first interview was at a distribution factory, I put decent clothes took some papers with me, and waited 2hours because there were 10 people waiting as well, I entered talked to  the interviewer was polited, gave him a solid hand shake, and we started talking, I never placed much attention on the salary because anything for me was fine I needed a job first before even thinking on that, at some point I told him the problem I had and I dunno the guy saw me like a wild wolf or something that could pass him what I have as a disease, then he asks me I had any experience in this kind of job and if I was able to withstand stress  I told him no didnt had that kind of job type before and about stress I was able to withstand and I told him the problem my grandfather had which is alzheimer in quite an advanced state, he says tons of bad words, swears alot and much more, then I noticed the person lost interest on me and I kinda felt alone in there waiting. I felt like on his mind I was giving more intensity to the money aspect which was not my intention at all but I cannot hide so easily the fact I was badly treated mentally for 14years because of my grandfather problem but well shit happens and its not his fault for that happening and that I understand. After that I wasnt called, I felt like ok was my first job interview I can get more however I spent 5euros on a stupid criminal registry and the most funny was the only factory that asked me one so far out of the almost 10job interviews I went. I tried sending another one past 2months to the same factory and nothing in this case not even an answer. After that got two more job interviews too Era and Remax, basically immobiliary market, I like numbers and I am good at basic maths nothing of those funny X and Y equations or whatever, because teachers never had the patience to teach me correctly so I lost the interest. First one I told as well the problem I had however that person advised me not to say it, the person liked me and even placed my interview on hold since I dont have a car nor driver license which would help me alot. On beginning of the interview I gave him a solid hand shake and said hi my name is David and so go on. The conversation took about almost 2hours, at some point I was asked what makes you think you got what it takes for this market and I told him I know how to divide the immobiliary market based on population age, in this case was 18-25 where most students try getting a home or rent a home for university or if their family is wealthy their dad or mom buy them a house which sounded the correct thing for me to say, after I said from 26-35 where most people buy houses to start a family since the female reproduction is more stable and less risky during that time and the fact that most people at the age of 26 got their university and their studies complete then I said +50 which is the age most people got their life set and there are quite a ton of wealthy old people and it seems a more easy target market for immobiliary. The guy liked and said hey your quite a smart guy specially for your age you know has much if not more as the others that are on same business for more years then you since you dont have any experience. Sadly didnt manage to get in because of the driver license and the car, but I didnt felt very sad because I had to make an insurance and I would receive my payment on green receipts which seems kinda crap. My grandmother got really mad at me for saying my problem but I didnt care much however I do understand her and the next interview to the immobiliary once again I didnt said my problem but the interviewer didnt bothered much since I didnt had drivers license, etc. After that I targetted the telephonic services in this case telephone, internet, tv services, went to three interviews and didnt had much sucess in any of them I know I gave the right answers on all the test situations and what I should do however these I didnt said my problem just in case. No sucess as well. I sent till now at least 50 CV`s and got recently called for 2more, 1 was to mc donalds and on this I said my problem as well, however this time I brought a 26questions and answers from what interviewers usually ask and 7 more questions to what my function would be, if there is career future, what challenges there are to my function, if its usual to work by objectives, I also asked if there were people that worked on menus to combine flavours like for example you ate "X" and after you offer "Y" to make the taste of both even more adicting or better, and I asked as well if "I told you I got an autism whats your concerns on hiring someone as me and why" and "On what way knowing about my problem can affect your decision to choose me as a worker". Then I got delivered a McDonalds test situations as well and obviously I answered them all, however I placed on every line (each question had 3) what I would and what I thought that action would affect the company, the client and the enviromnent I wanted to make it more realistic and more easy for my interviewer how I would react. Then I told the interviewer even if you dont want to hire me tell me something just to make things easier for me and supposedly getting an answer tomorrow as far the interviewer told me and in case that doesnt happen I should phone them and I feel ok with that. I tried changing the way I did my job interviews by writting myself the answers and the questions because I know from my own experience they didnt ask me most of the things that sounded correct and if they dont ask I will never say them because they didnt ask me and its frustrating as hell. So what should I do to improve even more to get a possible job, is it incorrect the way I approach my interviewer, did I act wrongly, because I was honest I lost a possible job or interviewers get so focused on my problem because they think I will burden them or because they are afraid how I will react or they think I am just lost case I dunno. If possible wanted answers from interviewers to what should I do because its really annoying and I am just trying to be honest to the interviewer that can put my bread and soup on the table but aint happening yet at least so far. My  grades are 11/20 on humanity and languages I know they aint top notch  but was the best I could without stressing myself really hard because of  my family issues and so I wouldnt spend tons of money on drugs, so was  the only solution I found for this problem and honestly I dont regret it  better with some mind sanity then no mind sanity at all. Sorry about the massive wall of text and hopefully some interviewers could give me some head ups on my problem.

  • Answer:

This is a tough one, because part of your question is about what you should do to prepare and part of your question is about whether or not you should disclose that you have Aspergers, and part of your question is really admitting your desperation about wanting to get a job. In terms of interview preparation, you want to do your research on both common interview questions and also how to read body language, facial cues and common language cues. You can prepare all of the common interview question answers, but as you learned, sometimes they don't ask you exactly what you think, and you'll have to be prepared for different questions. It also sounds like you didn't get a few positions because you didn't have a driver's license, which has nothing to do with your interviewing skills. I know you're feeling desperate, but you have to learn not to take that personally. If they require a drivers license, and you don't have one, then the job will go to someone who does, and it doesn't mean that you had a bad interview. You also seem stressed about your grades-but in most places that has no bearing on whether or not you get the job. Plenty of people who scored low grades can and have done well in job interviews. The thing to remember is that in a job interview, they don't need you to tell them everything about yourself. Only what would qualify you for this job. It sounds like you're trying to be honest, which is good, but perhaps you are giving them too much information that they don't need. Telling an interviewer that you just want to put bread on the table isn't relevant information that they need to know. They only need to know whether or not you can do the job. Keeping it simple may help you. Another thing to remember is that if you aren't sure exactly what information to give, asking them a clarifying question about the question they asked you is also appropriate. For example you might say: "You said, 'tell me about yourself' but do you only want my work history?" I would also suggest you practice-not just with a book but with other  people. From this question it seems like your support system isn't very  good in terms of family. Perhaps try friends who would be willing to  help. Part of interviewing means that you have to show the interviewer that you would be a good person to work with and your desperation might be off-putting to them, but you're not the first person to have this issue, so the key is to keep your feelings out of it and focus on what you can do for them. How can you add value? As you noticed with the Insurance interview, you have a lot to bring to the table, and you're struggling to communicate that, but with some practice, especially practice on focusing on reading body language, visual and social cues you can get over this. In terms of telling interviewers that you are autistic, I don't recommend it. Depending on where you live, they may have discrimination laws in place that will prevent them from asking, and you volunteering that information may make them uneasy, as they shouldn't know that information prior to hiring you. It may also come off as unprofessional, since they may already be making a huge effort to not discriminate. Again, I see your struggle to be honest, but I think you should focus on what is the best information to give them, and keep it simple. I hope this helps, it sounds like you're really struggling, and while I'm no expert on Autism, I have helped people who have similar struggles. The good news is that you know your limitations, and are working to overcome them.
