How can I get objects in a S3 bucket?

Besides convenience, does Dropbox offer anything that I can't get myself by just creating a bucket on S3 and uploading my stuff there?

  • Answer:

You make it sound as if the convenience is a minor detail. Dropbox is all about the convenience. If what you want is an online location that you can use to transfer files between machines, sure, S3 can do that. Hell, any FTP site you have access to can do that, and FTP has been around since the 1980s. The whole point of Dropbox is to make the process easy and transparent. Uploading and downloading files just kind of happens in the background.

If you use a system like rsync, or a program like transmit, not too much difference. There are some features like version control / history as well as being able to invite people to folders where that folder is synced to their bucket as well and they can add or remove items. This can be done by programing but it's very time consuming.

Those are two different applications. If all you need to do is store data reliably in the cloud, then going directly to S3 is a great choice. However, if you require access to that data concurrently across multiple devices and platforms in a convenient way, then you want something such as Dropbox.
