What rock'n'roll or classic rock song features the best scream?

  • From the origins of rock'n'roll to 1980 or so. Cutoff date approximate, but necessary to exclude endless examples from obscure metal bands of the more extreme varieties, which are a dime a dozen nowadays. "Scream" can mean shout, bellow, shriek, etc. Could be one particular scream in a particular song, or a song that features multiple screams, or even a singer who screamed on multiple songs.

  • Answer:

My favorite "rock scream" is Roger Daltrey's near the end of the Who's Won't Get Fooled Again (after the long synth break and before "meet the new boss / same as the old boss").

Led Zepplein's YOU SHOOK ME from their debut album. Towards the end of the song Robert Plant matches the the tune(guitar scream)  by Page with his soulful voice. It may sound weird at first, but his voice control is truly amazing!

The long soulful screaming, wailing and moaning of Clare Torry on Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" off of the Dark Side of the Moon album.

Mainly because this hasn't been mentioned yet, I'd go with Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast- the one right after the lines "Just what I saw in my old dreams were they reflections of my warped mind staring back at me 'Cos in my dream it's always there the evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair...." ....And then a cavalcade of bone-chillingness packed into one single scream.

Strange. 30 answers, none of them mentioning Mike Patton. Well, check this out, people. The guy is in a league of his own. Let's see some fragments first: Two tracks  from Angel Dust, the quintessential Faith No More album. I guess you've got to have a stomach for this nightmarish masterpiece, but in any case that cute kid from Linkin Park has paled in to utter insignificance by now. Malpractice. Just don't pay too much attention to the lyrics allright? Jizzlobber, another quite unnerving piece. I wasn't surprised to find out that Angel Dust is slang for PCP. PCP is one particularly nasty drug. Mike does movie voiceovers too... a compilation from I Am Legend: Still not convinced? OK, one more song then. It's just one song allright? So it can't be more than 74 minutes....  see if you can manage listening to it in one go.

The  best scream by a female vocalist by far would be Janis Joplin for Piece of my heart. Male vocalists: Axl Rose for Welcome to the Jungle, Brian Johnson for Thunderstuck.

Nick Mason

"Bastards of Young" by could-have-been-huge-if-they-had-given-a-fuck-or-two The Replacements. If you want to read a good rock & roll biogaphy, 8 would recommend picking up "Trouble Boys- The True Story of the Replacements" by Bob Mehr. The story of a band that had what it took to be huge, but constantly shot themselves in he foot.

All of Linkin Park Songs but the best scream was in "Faint". It goes something like this....  I can't feel the way I did before, don't turn your back on me. I won't be "IGNOOOOOORRRRREEEDDDDD!!!!!!!"

I glanced over the thirty four answers before me.I have to say when I read this question the scream I heard in my head was, Mcartney on The Beatles Revolution. Then Michael Jackson on the way you make me feel. They hadn't been mentioned so that's my 2 cents.
