How to fake a touch event in the system?

Does Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 have a touch event for JavaScript programming?

• I don't have Windows 7 on a touch device. It is reported that there is a zoom gesture. But, does it provide a touch event API as iOS Safari does? How many browers support touch events?

  The short answer is no -- neither desktop IE on Windows 7 nor the browser in Windows Phone 7 offer JS events for touch. The browser and any Silverlight apps can receive the events from the OS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd894494%28v=vs.95%29.aspx ), but they don't seem to be available in JavaScript. The IE9 previews aren't any better either (see https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/details/557721/html-touch-events-missing-in-ie9 if you have an MS Connect account). You might be able to hack something together with the proprietary drag events and/or the scroll events (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsphone7series/thread/7d532167-c26d-472f-8994-346f8fc9f840 ), although I'm not sure that'd work. To your "how many browsers have touch events" question, it's basically just iOS MobileSafari and the Android browser. Recent Firefox 4 betas have experimental touch events, and the webOS browser also exposes some, but neither of those use the touchstart/touchend naming that iOS folks are used to.
