What are the different types of cameras used to shoot movies?

  • While shooting for movies i.e motion pictures they use different types of camera equipment depending on its use. What are the different types of camera equipment used for movies? Answers with photographs of different cameras and some movie examples will be appreciated.

  • Answer:

Basically there are two types of (movie) cameras, and they are film cameras and digital cameras. Film cameras use some film type for storing images, like 16mm or 35mm. Digital movie cameras store image data in digital form in digital tapes or hard drives (this can include also memory cards). The benefit of digital is the ability to see 'dailies' instantly, while film must be processed separately. Nowadays more and more movies are being shot in digital format. To my understanding, camera makers such as RED (http://www.red.com) are changing the industry by bringing very high quality professional cameras available to indie film makers. Quality of course is a subjective thing and the target of much debate between film/digital aficionados.. There are little differences in film and digital cameras in their looks, but usually you will identify a film camera by its film magazine. Look into the Arri site (http://www.arri.de), they make both film and digital cameras. Sometimes it is easy to spot when something was shot in film or digital, sometimes not. Films like Collateral and especially Dancer in the Dark exhibit a 'videoish' look.

There are many different cameras, but the main used today are the Arri Alexa, RED, and Canon cameras since digital cinema has become the new norm. Digital film stock has proven to have more quality and less of a burden to collect and use for production purposes than original film stock. For regular film stock, PanaVision is used often. Arri Alexa camera The most dominant camera used for cinema right now is the Arri Alexa, a film-style camera created by the company Arri in the early 2010s. Anamorphic 35 mm lenses are typically used with this camera; along with a Super 35 mm sensor for good depth of field. The camera also allows for natural colors and good color separation. Red Epic Dragon 6K camera RED Camera is becoming used more often since 2007. The Red One and Epic Dragon are commonly used; it handles black shading really well (taking the noise out from an image) and boasts a 3-axis lens control system for focus, iris, and zooming features. There’s also a remote to adjust lens settings from a distance and on top of that, it’s more affordable; 14-megapixel sensor Canon 5D MK III Canon is also used to an extant on some occasions. It has sharp image quality and works well with low lights. Canon 5D Mark III has a Full Frame CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensor for converting light. It works well with both 16 mm and 35 mm lenses.; 23 megapixel sensor Panavision System 65 camera Panavision is probably the main camera used for regular film especially for higher quality film stock like 65 mm, and Super 70 mm. This suits more for natural beauty and epic films with landscapes. Panavision is good for decompressing the image to a 2.76:1 aspect ratio. Movie examples:Birdman (2014) was shot with the Arri Alexa Gone Girl (2014) with the RED Epic Dragon Iron Man 2 (2010) & House, MD season six finale, “Help Me” (2010) was shot with Canon 5D MK III The Master (2012) with Panavision System 65
