Is computer support a good career choice?

I am interested in pursuing a research career in machine learning. Is the MS program in Computer Science at New York University a good choice?

• I wish to pursue a PhD in machine learning from one of the grad schools in the US. Is MSCS program at NYU (http://cs.nyu.edu/webapps/content/academic/graduate/msrulesf09) a good choice, in terms of coursework and research projects, that would help me build a strong profile for PhD applications? The degree requires completing 36 credits, out of which 6 can come from thesis. The remaining credits need to be earned from coursework, some of which would be related to Machine Learning, and the rest to general Computer Science. Would the coursework leave me with time to take on additional projects to work on, so that I am able to explore areas of my interests, as well as to receive recommendations for PhD applications?

  There are 9 credits/3 courses that are mandatory for MSCS at GSAS. You can waive them by proving your competency(you have to clear the exams). That will leave you with more space for taking subjects that you like.Whether coursework will leave you with enough time to pursue thesis is a very subjective question and depends on how prepared you already are with the basics. For instance, those who know ML/Linear Algebra moderately well before the program begins successfully finish their thesis. Also, since this is grad school, you can expect the course-load to go bonkers from time to time.  You will also need to maintain 3.75  GPA to take the thesis route, which you can't waive.NYU(Courant+Data Science) ML is very reputed, and if you do well, can place you among top 5 ML PhD programs in the world.
