Why are older consoles more durable than newer ones?

Why have all three next gen gaming consoles chosen AMD processors over Intel ones?

  • If the answer is "They're cheaper and just as powerful", then why is Intel still on top?

  • Answer:

Gaming consoles are about margins. The standard business practice is to sell consoles at-cost or at a loss, and make up the difference through the overpriced games. Compare this to PCs, which are sold at fairly high margins (especially for gaming and pro-sumer PCs). This means that cost is a much larger factor for a console manufacturer. Also, AMD provides custom SoCs for the needs of each gaming console. This is why the XBOX One and PS4 all have different specifications despite all using the same basic AMD Jaguar CPUs. Intel does not provide this sort of customization for any customer.
