What other types of jobs is an experienced customer service representative qualified for?
-
I graduated college 5 years ago and my first job afterwards was taking calls in a call center. I'm now looking for anything to get me out of this type of position, but all I can find that I'm qualified for are other customer service positions.

I can offer some suggestions, but without knowing you, your skills and goals (not to mention location), obviously I am at a bit of a disadvantage, but I humbly throw them out for you to add to your thinking: Inside Sales--at many companies inside sales means lots of calling, handling rejection and learning how to position and qualify. Although it's not for everyone, a couple of years (give or take) at this and if you're good at it, you can probably then be promoted or apply for a direct Sales job. Again, not to generalize, but in hardware, software, pharma and some high tech (as just some examples) the potential pay is high. Customer Support (2nd level or higher or sustaining engineering)--obviously I am going to make and assumption that you have some technical chops or have the ability to learn. Although this is still customer service (to some degree) these higher levels of Service/Support generally pay better and may be stepping stones into Engineering, Product Management, Support Management, etc. Marketing--Obviously entry level, but again, I am leveraging your potentially obtained skills in working/talking with people. There are definitely companies that are taking on entry level marketing people. Professional Services--with the economy as it is, I see many bigger companies hiring entry level folks with entry level salaries and teaching them pro. services....the can then weed out the talented from the rest...promote them and pay them more, but still less than an expert they recruited. As I think about your question more, I might come back and edit this to add some other thoughts, but I think you should feel that you have potentially lots of options open to you and it might take a lot of interviewing and pushing forward and a couple of years on the grunt side, but companies will always find places for talented people that can learn quickly. It's not teaching someone about a product or service that's usually hard (even something like programming can be learned if someone applies the energy and has an affinity to it)....what's been my observation as I hire for teams and groups is to find people that are energetic, really enjoy the thing they are learning, find people that have the "smarts" and ability to quickly learn. They ask lots of questions, but they know when to ask them and when to listen and can read their audience. Hopefully this was helpful and if not, my apologies. --Jeff

Customer Service = Sales Assistant, Marketing Assistant, Receptionist, Account Rep, Sales Rep, Customer Service on a sales floor (not sure what an exact job title would be), Bank Teller. Maybe even Human Resources Assistant. Event Planning, maybe? Befriend someone in the HR profession and ask them how your skills can be transferred into different avenues for you.
