Top States Universities?

Why does the United States have almost all of the best universities in the world?

  • Take a look at the ranking of universities in this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_Ranking_of_World_Universities 17 of the top 20 places are US universities! Why is the US so successful in producing world class universities?

  • Answer:

Academic journal citations, in one format or another, form 60% of the rankings in the link above - publications having been made in the English language and published by journals that are almost entirely published somewhere in the Anglophone world (mostly UK or US). US academics face heavy pressure to publish as much as possible, with most research institutions basing tenure decisions on publication metrics. The university as an aggregate needs to have a high number of publications, knocking out of consideration any institution that may be phenomenal in a number of subject areas but has any sort of a delineated mission vis-a-vis the breadth of potential human knowledge. More abstractly, the hegemonic view of what a "top world university" should look like is heavily influenced by the US model of higher education, even if Chinese academics have composed this particular methodology. American universities have spent decades refining how to size up each other according to quantitative measurements of "quality", and these measurements influence where foreign scholars decide to go when studying or researching in the US, and the measurements themselves as devised by American universities are catchy and easy enough to use on the international level.

1. Money, a lot of money 2. Money well spended sometimes 3. The rankings are made by anglosaxons mirroring themselves. As almost all rankings (the Moody/Fitch/S&P revolving problem) 4. However they really have amazing universities. 5. This question seems to have the greatest number of non-coincidental responses. So I guess, nobody really knows the response.

My belief is that this is due to academic freedom and the tenure system. American professors have so much leeway in terms of research subjects and the directions that they want to pursue.    This has allowed for innovative researches that you don't see anywhere else. American professors are not struck with researches that have commercial interests - in fact some professors only want to do researches that has no commercial values. Innovative and knowledge advancing researches attract grants and new students and faculties and are also a big part of any ranking system.

Founders, and tradition, I think.  Right from the first settlements in this country, the settlers established colleges like Harvard and William and Mary, copying to some extent British Cambridge and Oxford.  Their religious and political beliefs led them to believe that a well-educated population was vital.  Later, with the Industrial Revolution, it became vital to educate scientists and engineers.   All along the wealthy were willing to found and fund private colleges, governments were willing to allocate land and tax-free status, and alumni, foundations, and companies have become eager to support universities.  After World War II the GI Bill allowed millions of veterans form the working class to pursue advanced education while supporting their families -- this meant the establishment of many more state colleges and universities to accommodate the enormous pent-up demand.  The nineteenth century two year Normal Schools that trained teachers turned into four-year teachers colleges and then into state colleges and even state universities. In the 1960s alternative colleges were added, along with a couple thousand community colleges.

Easy immigration (F1->H1->GC->Citizenship) Universities are best because they have great students. The reason US universities get best students across the world because it is easiest way to live an american dream. Make it mandatory for all students to go back to their country and see if US universities will be best.

I think there are many reasons: Language English is the de facto international language and therefore many students intending to go to a university learn it.  It is interesting to note that of the top 15 universities on the ARWU ( considered by many to be the most objective ranking system since it is based in Shanghai and China doesn't have a dog in the fight so to speak) list 13 are American and the other two are Cambridge and Oxford. Money American universities are comparatively wealthy through endowments and government sponsorships or research grants.  Money matters.  It attracts the best minds because they are able to do what is sometimes costly research. Method of Ranking Connected to the above most ranking systems such as the ARWU rely heavily on research to weight their decisions.  That is, papers published in prestigious journals and awards won by professors and alumni.  What does this mean for the student?  Well for the undergraduate it may not mean anything or even be a detriment.  I graduated from one of the top 15 universities listed and I well remember attending the first day of a 100 level science class.  The professor began the class by telling us how he didn't want to teach this class because it took him away from his research.  However, it was his turn so he would get through it.  I was paying my own tuition and wasn't exactly pleased with his attitude.  I will say there were some awesome professors too.  In fact I can only remember two I didn't like. Flexibility It is fairly easy to change majors in American universities.  That is not so in much of the world some making students decide while still in high school.  How does a child of 14 or even 18 really know what he or she wants to do so young? USA The USA is essentially a country of immigrants.  It is attractive to professors from around the globe because they know they and their children can rather easily become citizens and accepted as that.  That is not so in every country and in some it is impossible to ever become accepted. Also the mere fact that American universities are regarded as the best attracts the best people.

American schools tend to be more holistic in their evaluation of applicants, both in admissions and in evaluation. In contrast, many schools outside of the U.S. (e.g., Canadian and Chinese schools) will base their admission almost entirely on GPA or standardized test scores without so much as a single interview. U.S. schools are looking for diversity and well-roundedness rather than raw grade performance. They spend the time to get to know applicants and often make personal phone calls when admission is granted. American schools place a premium on creativity, critical thinking, and innovative accomplishments. European and Asian schools, in contrast, place considerable weight on one or two exams. Participation, team work, and other elements of education aren't given as much priority. Teachers don't need to be as intimately involved with the students because the grading schemes are based mostly on one or two exams. Arguably, the plethora of private schools creates an atmosphere of independent thought. An example of this is how Harvard's school of public health developed its own food guide. In contrast, the prestigious schools in Canada teach the official government food guide, despite its unscientific and corrupt basis. It is more difficult to challenge government policy when that's where the funding is coming from.

Because it is the educationalists and visionaries that decide on how the university has to function, what is the syllabus etc.  For a while in the past it happened in India too.   But it is very unfortunate that most of the state universities in India are misguided by the senate, students associations, and politicians.   Boycotting the classes is the worst the students can do to themselves and to the education system as a whole.

Some argue that the US have not the best schools. French and Russian elite schools are most looked after in some fields such as stochastic calculus, but the criteria for ranking universities in US ranking include 1. Size of university: elite schools entries are based on competitive exams, very few enter 2. Equivalence to English speaking universities: french and russian schools have elite special classes 3. Number of international prizes: Nobel, Field...This again is related to many factors such as the money available for research.
