  • Mobile apps are coming to enterprise, and not just as marketing tools. As business starts looking for file sharing, collaboration, productivity, financial or BI apps, what are the main security concerns, and who/what/how are they being addressed.

    End point security is the root of all concerns as enterprise applications mobilize over time. Proper end point security mitigates concerns around lost devices, malware/viruses, careless employees, etc. RIM has developed a very solid mobile platform that has set the bar high for end point security. Unfortunately, they have not been able to keep up with the features consumers are looking for, so enterprises are dealing with how to trust iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices. Apple has made some moves to improve their end point security and enterprise management position, which helps explain their success in the enterprise with iPhones and iPads. There is still a long way to go however, and there are some great example videos on YouTube of how 6 minutes with a lost/stolen iPhone in hand can lead to access to all passwords stored in the device keychain. Apple's security focus has historically been DRM-focused so they have a decent data protection story, but they are still lacking a good end point security story. I expect they will be catching up over time to offer RIM-like security with features like secure boot. Microsoft's focus with Windows Phone 7 is completely on the consumer, and this is evident with the platform launching and not even supporting all of the ActiveSync device policy configurations out of the box. Over time, I expect MS will get back to having good support for the enterprise, but their focus clearly isn't there right now. Exploits have already been made available to root Windows Phone 7 devices and I haven't seen any response or mitigation from Microsoft. Google has not done enough with Android to have a comparable story to RIM and they likely will not given the tradeoffs between user experience and security. Andy Rubin has been very clear that Android is a consumer mobile platform so I would look to Google to do the bare minimum to keep the enterprise door open. Companies are stepping in to fill the void with a number of different approaches. Companies like Nitrodesk and Enterproid are looking to solve the problem from an application perspective, however, this is pretty futile since any platform compromise can quickly lead to application compromise. VMWare is using virtualization along with Open Kernel Labs, which requires significant hardware support for an acceptable user experience. 3LM added enterprise management features and create a secure channel for communication to access enterprise data, but there is nothing evident about attempts to actually secure the platform. I've been looking at this problem pretty closely and believe there's an interesting opportunity here.
