He is arguably one of the world's most famous Austrian! The F1 Career: He is widely considered as a Formula 1 legend and one of the most courageous racing heroes ever. â He won the F1 World Champion ship for the first time in 1975. â However, life in the circuit is fraught with risks. In 1976, he suffered a crash and almost died. â He survived but was scarred for life. â But don't you think that it stopped him. He came back. He raced. Again. And went on to win two more World Championships. â His rivarly with McLaren's racer James Hunt was brought onto the silver screen by Ron Howard. â And then he retired. But only from the sport and embarked on another career. Soaring the skies: He established 'Lauda Air' in 1979 with an operating base at Vienna International Airport. But he didn't have enough money to get the airplanes flying. He got back to racing. Made money. Retired again. But only this time, 'Lauda Air' took off. â The initial days of 'Lauda Air' were in the form of charter and cargo business and he himself had earned a commercial pilot license and often flew his own planes. â The business expanded. He got into international routes and started operating a commercial airliner as well.
