Why doesn't Facebook support voice message/comment on the website?
-
The information in Facebook is rich in perspective of vision, but it seems too quiet. I know Facebook messenger supports the voice message (I think there are still significant portion of users do not know since the button is not directly shown on the UI). But why the Facebook web site does not support the voice message/comment? I think as more and more people use mobile to access Facebook, it is more convenient for them to input via voice instead of typing on the mobile devices. Moreover, for users who view the message, is it possible to transform and show the message into text using speech recognition technologies (when user click the message, the voice message can be played)? Maybe Facebook has already tried it and found it not good by validating via A/B testing. Edit: I used Facebook messenger to send the voice message and opened it from the website, it works very well. So I think from the perspective of information transferring and storage, there is no technology bottleneck. As Facebook just created the AI Lab and hired Yann Lecun (one of the top researcher in the area of deep learning) as the lab leader to do the research on deep learning. Also the deep nets is slow in training, but it is fast for prediction once the model is trained. So from the perspective of speech recognition, I think it may also feasible in the near future. Among the possibilities that Thach provided, I think (3) and (4) might be the answer.

Answer:
The answer to the question "why X doesn't have feature Y" is usually among the followings: the people working on X haven't thought of Y the people working on X think that Y is bad the people working on X think that Y is bad for a large portion of their users the people working on X may think that Y is good but there are better things -- usually easier things with higher impact -- to be built at the moment. the people working on X may think that Y is an excellent feature but is technically infeasible. In this particular case, I think the second part of (4) is definitely true. I could think of tons of higher impact things for FB to build right now. (5) may be true. Think about storing, indexing, retrieving voice messages from a billion users. It's hard enough with just text and images. (3) and (2) may also be true. Some of the reasons: learning from users' comments is a a big part of what makes FB good and it's much harder to learn from voice than to do so from text. So, allowing voice comments may reduce user experience in the long run. it may also be bad for the network. Speech recognition technologies are nowhere near perfection, so a lot of users may see nonsensical texts on their feeds because some of their friends have enter a speech comments. Among the above possible reasons, (1) is the least likely. There're thousands people at FB and if my experience was typical, these people spend a lot of time daydream about their product's features :-). Chance is that one of them would have thought about this.

Funny thing, I quietly launched this feature as a Chrome extension on Dec 27, called http://TalkAndComment.com and it's available on the Chrome store: http://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/djnhkfljnimcpelfndpcjcgngmefaobl

Speech recognition technology isn't perfect yet. Ever receive a transcription of a voicemail on Google Voice? Chances are, it's pretty mangled. If Facebook were to implement this feature, it would probably lead to a lot of hilarious mistakes and take a lot of engineering resources to solve one of the more difficult problems in computer science today. If you want to comment via voice, your iPhone or Android device should be able to take input as speech. It's not quite the same as Facebook translating the message for you, but it works pretty much the same way and you have the chance to correct any errors before you post it.
