What is the best way to look for a potential co-founder in Bangalore?
-
My Background: I recently graduated & took up a job with a major software corporation in Bangalore. I have always been interested in startups & after a tough decision between starting up & taking up a job I chose the latter. However a couple of weeks into the job, I am already getting restless & have decided to start developing on the idea I have had for a while. If you are thinking of starting up or are a start-up enthusiast & would like to meet up over coffee (or beer), please leave a note.

Answer:
I'm launching a new Internet business and looking for a co-founder in Bangalore. He/she must have a web technology background, be passionate about launching a business, and be willing to get international exposure. I travel to Bangalore very often for business and personal purposes (my wife is from South India). I love both coffee and beer, so please write to if you want to meet up and talk.

Your most potential co-founder would be the closest of your friends. If you can't convince your best friend(s) to join your thrill ride, no stranger would. And in my opinion a co-founder is meant for emotional support apart from all his technical/business intelligence. So rather, take your best friend(s) out for beer and ideate with them instead of wanting to meet random strangers who could be potential "co-founders".

Its as good or as naive as asking , whats the best way to find the woman to fall in love and get married to her. While for betrothal, you have dating sites, matrimonials etc for such match making there are less conspicuous tools. Try hanging around in related startup events just as you hang around malls, pubs , cinemas to to hook on to a hot chick. PS: Dont ever try to get your best friend to be a cofounder. You can find out why by reading '48 laws of power'. Sooner or later power rush catches on in your company and you may lose a lot.

A sincere piece of advice. Before you start looking around for a co-founder, you need to ask yourself why you are looking for one to begin with. Are there areas in your business idea that you are not experienced in? Do you really need an extra pair of hands and legs to get started? Are you comfortable (at peace with yourself!) knowing that at the end of the day both of you will have different (though cohesive) strategies, tactics, and expectations for executing your business: speaking to employees and customers, negotiating deal sizes, portfolio diversification/growth, partnerships/acquisition/merger, etc. Ask yourself whether you really have solid responsibilities to share, expertise to gain, and tangible benefits to derive from a potential business partner. Or, do you just need a punching bag or perhaps some emotional support to lie back on when tough times come knocking? Getting a good co-founder is quite similar to getting a good wife, and is simply not a walk in the park.

Attend some startup events and start letting people know that you're interested/available. Bangalore has a long list of startup events where you can: - Validate your idea - Demonstrate your product/service - Find a cofounder - Recruit employees for your venture You can also check out some online forums such as http://www.pluggd.in/ that may assist you in your search.

It actually is a huge step to select a partner. I run a Web Development firm (http://www.lostinkaos.com) myself and we are active in Bangalore as well as Hong Kong. Whatever it is you decide to do, just make sure that you are willing to do a lot of sacrifices and acknowledge the other person when you are wrong.
