Best time to write GRE?

I am a 3rd year student of electrical engineering with a CGPA of 7.2. Should I prepare for GATE '15 (which requires special preparation in my case as I haven't studied in that much depth in these 3 years) or should I go for GRE (which judges not your technical but English skills)?

  • Not to mention that I am from a decent government engineering college and am planning on doing summer training from a PSU and have done 1 project in renewable resources as of now. Will it be a good plan if I concentrate on GATE'15 and quant (for placements) and then after some experience in my core field write GRE and do MS ? Or should I not waste time and write GRE this year itself and apply for fall of 2015 in US universities ? Please help me out as there is not much time left for me to take a decision.

  • Answer:

As an IITian , I would suggest you, you opt for GRE and fly Abroad. Reason: IITs dont expose you to real world as compared to Foreign universities. You would experience the same old fashioned teaching, running for your classes day-in and day-out, exhauted at the end of the day, leaving no time for your research(1st year MTech). Go abroad, learn their skills, make your investment repay you, earn some money, and get back to the country. (Since you havent mentioned any financial problem, I assume you dont have any between the two)

Firstly , GATE exam decides your admission into an IIT/IISc ,while GRE is only a part of the admission process. If you somehow manage to score well in GATE ,you will have a chance to study at IITs/IISc. Though foreign universities have better real world exposure, when it comes to International standards IIT's are ranked among the best institutes ( I mean in comparison to universities abroad ,where you might get admit.-I am not judging , evaluate your profile and see where all you have a chance ) My suggestion would be 1) Prepare well for GATE , -If you get an admission at a top institute then join it. Do your Phd from abroad which in most cases will be fully funded. 2) Evaluate your profile , estimate how much score you can manage in GRE, and as per your overall profile where all can you get admit. (Remember most MS degrees will not be funded ). Once you have done so ,compare your foreign university options with IITs/IISc (evaluate yourself ). 3) Once a decision has been arrived taking into account ,Return on investment , reputation of the institute that you will join and also the funding scenario . 4)Decide what you want to do -Even after all decision making the final decision should rest with you. All the best...!!
