Is Project Management a science or an art?

Should I pursue a PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification if I'm interested in a career in data science, and in the longer term, leading a team of data scientists?

  • And/or should I familiarize myself with project management methods?

  • Answer:

Project Management is a skill used to Manage a Project which gets executed by a team in a given time-frame(start date and end date) and has a result/ outcome/ product or service generated. So irrespective of where you are in IT, MFG, Finance or any other domain you should be interested in learning project management if your job profile demands so. However, even before you start preparing for PMP you should know certain basics about the exam. Here are some tips: http://thetomorrowbeckons.blogspot.com/2014/05/pmp-tips-for-pmp-aspirants-know-basics.html

Before you go too far down the PMP path, you should realize that PMP is heavily-oriented around a traditional plan-driven approach to project management and a lot of software development projects are rapidly moving towards a more agile approach to project management.  You may find that to be true in data sciences as well.  I recommend that you at least familiarize yourself with both Agile and traditional plan-driven approaches to project management so that you can understand the differences and make a decision for yourself which one you're more likely to use.  I want to emphasize; however, that this is not a binary and mutually-exclusive choice between "Agile" and "Waterfall" as some people think it is.  A good Agile Project Manager should know how to blend those two approaches together in the right proportions to fit any situation.Chuck CobbAuthor of "The Project Manager's Guide to Mastering Agile"http://agileprojectmanagementacademy.com/

I suggest not. While being a PM does involve leadership, it is about other things too. PMP is about the minutiae of how a project works - or doesn't, so that the PM can maintain control through to delivery.
