Which is the best iit?

Which IIT has the best campus life?

  • Present reasons to support your claim. (Like activities that can happen only at that IIT). If you think yours is not the best, or you can't compare, share what makes your IIT better than others in at least one way. New IITs can also share their perspective.

  • Answer:

Say what you want about the other campuses, but I don't think any campus other than Kanpur can offer the unique sight of a SIS guard chasing a nilgai on a bicycle. And yeah, we have peacocks dancing in our corridors too.

I disagree with anon that campus life at Delhi, Bombay is better just by the virtue of the campus being located in a city. A major component of the awesomeness of campus life comes from the interaction between people within the campus. The location of the campus is important, of course and makes a difference no doubt. But I doubt its a large difference.  At most,  what you can do if you are in(or close to) some city is go for a movie or roam around the malls. There is nothing else you can do at a city. And if these things appeal to you , and make your "campus life " awesome then your life is just sad. I am not overweening enough to claim that my campus life(IIT Kharagpur) was the best but I can say it wasn't significantly worse than the other IIT's.  Campus life's awesomeness at any college is a function of the quantity and quality of student events and the magnitude of freedom that the students are privy to. For example, students at the Vellore institute of technology, are not supposed to stay out beyond certain times(I think its 6 pm for females!!!  My sympathies, girls). So that   sucks and I can see the campus life awesomeness meter rapidly nosediving for VIT. Fortunately, at kgp we enjoyed plenty of freedom and the year all around was pretty much packed with events and activities.  I imagine it is not significantly different for the other IIT's. So, all in all, its impossible to say which IIT because awesomeness of campus life is a subjective and abstract aspect of college life.

IT-BHU. Sorry my juniors got offended-it’s IIT-BHU. So what we are still confused with our IIT status, but  still the campus is the stellar. No bragging about the serenity and audacity about the place, let’s discuss its uniqueness. 1. Paradise In Disguise.  It gives a pleasant feeling to experience a drop in the mercury just walking in 200m from the BHU main gate and come further towards the south BHU campus, yes  yes the IIT-BHU Campus I meant, the feeling gets amplified. It’s easily the most spacious stretch of even 10 square kilometer landmass in the most crowded holy city-Varanasi. Campuses at other IIT’s are nice and serene,to be honest in some measures will be better than ours but they lack this unique characteristic for their campus-the only spacious stretch of landmass in the adjacent civilization. I have the youth coming to the BHU campus just for the sake of a free ride, to enjoy the sight of ever stretching fields, play on the IIT Gymkhana Turfs, and kissing. Yes, it’s secretively a place for the local couples to find some refuge from the staring narrowing lanes and bustling Ghats.   2.      For one life is n’t just the physical surrounding, it is a thin balance between appreciating, capturing, treasuring, valuing the moments and not getting attached to them. Every IITan appreciates, treasures and values his days spent at his/her IIT, but often finds it difficult to detach from it. We enjoy our campus, appreciate it, treasure it , value it but the stellar amenities in our hostels- the luxury of choked wash basins, spacious rooms, tea-serving canteens, numerous and excellent hangout places and many more-compel us not to get attached to them.     3.      “Banarasi –ether “ dominating the lifestyle. In the city where death is awaited with anticipation and to die here is a celebration , one can’t have reasons to complain about life here. The cubicles in first year become a hangout and hang over venue for ten, the monotonous and repeating ghats tell a distinguished story of it’s own, every ghat attaches a unique story with your life,  the dingy dejected DG becomes a must visit everyday pilgrimage, the corridors roll themselves to provide excellent cricketing turfs, a cup of tea is the only one possession one wants after a “particular sequence” of drags.   4.      One learns the Gangs Of Wasseypur accent, you are the “mardwa” and  you often u hear “gharda udaa”,"eke likh la tu". Either you miss your morning breakfast or have the jalabi- kachori combo along with lemon tea but the breakfast is never at the mess.   5.      Maal. The city of light gets enlightened by the puffs. It’s the Shiva’s nagari where a substantial number of international tourists are attracted by the easily accessible hash. Hence, the administration also relaxes with it and one can enjoy it by the river bank at two in the night with whosoever he wants.   6.      Being in IIT, my life should be pleased or tormented with girls. Ours is an integral part of a varsity and the only one in the country where the engineering stream is well reputed and stands tall with the specially built technology bustling institutes. For those interested in bird watching go to VT and look around for all the birds-indian, European, aussie, name any. For those interested in fishing go a little further , a little near the Malviyaji, who is the one who feels most offended when an varsity student commits a misdeed. Though you need talent and a docile sheep like me fail miserably, but the catch is in bounty even if you are an average looking with some bucks in your torn jeans, only you need to accept a certain needs and ignore a bunch of yours.   7.      Now I am at IIT, hence in no case one can have interests in academics, to look cool and have a reputation among my friends one must develop a unique art. The moment man perceives something beyond the academics, he brings art in the universe. If you are good at painting, make some hotchpotch canvas and have it displayed at the next exhibition at faculty of visual arts. If you know how to play a western musical instrument, you are the next reprsenting BHU at the university meet. If your athletic and eager to work hard, you have the right platform to be next big thing in your sport.Every year you witness all India university sports meet for atleast two major sports.   8.      Mess. No one boosts of theirs, but I do. Mess here are student run, hence I have the freedom to opt out of regular food expenses for the mess. Moreover, every student is treated special and no queues are made for the take away. You will be served even at 11 in the night or 3 in the afternoon and if you do favors for the mess workers, they are eager for the room service too.   9.      Job. After indulgence in leisure and free carefree graduation, it’s highly unlikely you will get even the average package that one gets in other IITs which is embarrassing after IIT and more than often this embarrassment compels one to shit sweat and stride to be the master rather than the slave.   10.  Stress-busters are rarely needed. Either you live happily with one of your girls or everyday you wake up early for tour to ” akela “baba’s place and do your running routine at the amphitheatre.

A2A I don't think this can be reasonably answered by anyone, since everyone has detailed experiences with one or at max two IITs. But I can list what makes IITB's campus life good, and you can compare that with the others: Sheer number of activities to take part in. In my freshie year I realized that I would be only able to do a small fraction of what I wanted to do in the institute -- there were so many interesting clubs and events being held, but not enough time for all of them. Time management is a huge issue because of this, but you can imagine what it says about the number and quality of such activities The above point applies to interest groups too. Are you enthusiastic about something? Chances are there are a lot more people enthusiastic about the same. If you look hard enough you can even find such people for niche topics. Small / dingy hostels means that you spend most of your day elsewhere, hanging out with others. Campus life > hostel life :P The city is nearby, which means that you can go out and enjoy (movie, mall, whatever tickles your fancy) whenever you want. The fact that most IITB-ians prefer to enjoy inside the insti when all these things are easily accessible is a testament to how awesome the campus life is.

IIT Bombay. This is all based on what I have heard from my friends and colleagues in other IITs, which might be factually incorrect at places (do correct me in that case). 1) Campus Location - The lush green campus with lakes and hills, is a store-house of flora and fauna isolates the inmates from the highly polluted environment of a metropolitan city like Mumbai, yet, if you ever wish to go out and have fun, you are in one of the better patch of Mumbai i.e. Powai, with Hiranandani  (a place which has pretty much everything you can think of : food, market, booze, chicks, everything) a foot away. So, you are very much inside Mumbai (City that never sleeps), yet isolated from it. Indeed, IIT Bombay in itself is a city of its own. Pic: view of Hiranandani from IIT Bombay    2) Academics - Without a second thought, in academics, IIT Bombay is at the top in India with statistics supporting it.' 3) Extra-Curricular Activities - IIT Bombay has a very wide range of extra-curricular activities categorized majorly under Cultural Activities, Sports and Technical Activities. You name it, we have it. These activities are conducted in the institute by the students who are passionate about it, through different clubs, camps and competitions. Students learn a lot from these activities and events through interaction with peers, seniors, juniors, faculty, professionals (yes, being in Mumbai, we have easier access to professionals in various fields), anybody and everybody. Moreover, many other independent bodies exist in IIT Bombay to promote social service, career counselling, entrepreneurship, student-alumni relations, advocate for the rights of LGBTQ, and what-not. In addition, IIT Bombay organizes the nation's most happening cultural festival i.e. Mood Indigo and technical festival i.e. IIT Bombay TechFest. The best thing about these: None of these demand a qualification/pre-requisite to join, these are open activities for everyone. All that is needed to learn is enthusiasm. 4) Hostel Life - Agree that the hostel facilities in IIT Bombay are not even close to ideal, but there is a lot more beyond these. The rich hostel culture, where everyone from batchmates, juniors and seniors to mess workers and hostel staff are like family, and they can literally go to any extent to earn pride for their hostels (Inter-hostel GCs and PAFs are the perfect example of this). There are hostel fests, valfis, festival celebrations organised by the hostel which unites students giving them a sense of oneness. Also, there are very strict rules against ragging in IIT Bombay, which makes freshmen very safe in the initial days and gives them time to settle down. Matki Phod Event Festival Sweets 5) Facilities - IIT Bombay has very good infrastructure for academics (compared to Indian Govt. Colleges and other IITs), cultural activities (auditoriums, studios, music room, dance room, professional equipments like spotlights, cameras, music instruments, etc.), sports (cricket field, football ground, tennis courts, basketball and badminton courts, large swimming pool, etc,) and technical activities (like student labs and workstations, equipments like telescope etc.) and many many more. Further there are certain facilities like gym, pool table, TV, Music room, dance room etc. in every hostel. Open Air Theatre Olympic size swimming pool 6) PAF (Performing Arts Festival) - PAF i.e. GOD (as we call it in IIT : 'PAF God hota hai') is one very big event very unique to IIT Bombay. It is the flagship cultural event held annually where a group of hostels prepare and present a live performance (with drama, dance, music, videos, aesthetics etc. being judging parameter) to a jam-packed OAT having innumerable alumni, residents and their guests, faculty, staff and of course students. Entirely made by the students of IIT Bombay There is a lot lot more about it, which I will edit and add later as I recollect and get time. IIT Kharagpur-all the way :) This is what I have witnessed in all my kgp life that gives me immense pride to say it has the best campus life amongst all IIT's or among all the colleges in the nation for a matter of fact. Location - IIT Kharagpur is located 120 kilometres (75 mi) west of Kolkata. The campus is located five kilometres away from Kharagpur's railway station. The layout of the present campus and the design of the buildings were carried out by a group of engineers and architects under the guidance of Werner M. Moser, a Swiss architect. The 8.5 square kilometres (2,100 acres) campus is residence to about 20,000 inhabitants. In 2006, IIT Kharagpur had about 470 faculty members, 1,933 employees and approximately 5,500 students living on the campus. The campus has a total of 55 kilometres (34 miles) of roadways. The Institute plans to go Green by 2020. Though to most it may sound that compared to it's fellow IIT's,KGP might have locational disadvantages but it isn't so.Being so cutoff and isolated from hustle bustle of metropolitan life style has helped develop in IIT KGP a student life so complete in it's own that we hardly need to seek anything else to keep us busy. So without further ado, let's have a glimpse of what IIT KGP has that entitles it to be called the best college in terms of overall student life be it academics or extra academics. A2A by: As I am from IIT Kharagpur, so I can tell you about the campus life of KGP. It has been a year for me in KGP, and believe me if I have to describe it in one word I would say: “Awesome”.Welcome to IIT Kharagpur:Some exclusive things which KGPians enjoy: Huge campus: Yeah. If you are a night owl and love to go for walks with friends in night probably KGP is the best. Not only big, it’s beautiful too. The PEACEFUL lifestyle: “PEACE”, a word which has a very deep meaning for KGPians. As much I’ve come to know so far KGP is the most peaceful (Stress-free) IIT. Believe me I have experienced it myself. Unlimited WiFi: Unlike some other IITs, where there is limitations on internet usage, we get unlimited internet access. And I think this fact itself can make the campus life much easier and better. DC++: This is really different and important things one uses in KGP. It’s IIT KGP’s own hub, where we can get anything (movies, games, any softwares). That too at about 75–80 MBPS download speed. Now I don’t think you require anything else. Still if you want to know more then: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Fest: It’s one of the largest student run college fests in India. Walking on the roads of KGP with your group of friends at night with some beer cans (in case you do), is a different experience. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kshitij: Kshitij is the annual techno-management fest of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IIT_Kharagpur,Started in the year 2004, the idea of Kshitij was conceived with the aim to provide the technically inclined youth a national-level platform, where their talent and expertise would be recognized and duly rewarded. Hostel life: Few things can’t be shared, you have to experience em yourself. But seriously its fun. P.S.: Though there is not much outside the campus in Kharagpur, still few beaches and Kolkata are at a distance that you can go there every weekend.

Ask any IITian this question and they will reply that their campus life was the best..!! :) For me, it's IIT-BHU campus life..  This question can never have any unanimous reply.. Mind you.. ;) :)

Asking this question and expecting an unbiased answer with no pretentiousness at all is nothing short of ignorant stupidity. How can anyone give an objective answer to this question? Who has studied or spent at least a week in every single IIT Campus for them to answer this stupid question at the first place. And people who gave answer saying their campus is the best with supporting facts validating their answer......all the very best!
