How does italy's climate affect its people?

How does climate affect a person's personality?

  • I have seen data that indicates that there is a higher rate of suicide and depression in places with year-round cloud cover and rainfall. I am also wondering if climate affects entire groups of people. It seems like people who live on tropical islands are the most affable and easy-going people, whereas people who are from bitterly cold or arid climates tend to be more serious and aggressive. Is there any correlation between climate and personality?

  • Answer:

Robert Levine's The Geography of Time has an interesting take on where one lives globally affects what time sense that person's culture tends to live in, IE; looking to the future, living in the present moment or revering the past. And this time sense lends a "cultural personality" to different regions of the globe. for a good review on this book: http://www.timezone.com/library/archives/archives0082

I'm quite certain it doesn't affect personality, although I'm unsure whether any research has been done on the effects of climate on personality. I wouldn't know how anyone could do so, anyhow... But it definitely affects mood.

Another side of the story; Arctic residents viewed their land as benelovent and empowering. How can this be? The people were optimistic because they never expected much of their enviroment, and were happy that their gods gave them at least that much to live by. Let's say, U.S. People here are spoiled. The relatively good climate gives good crops, and people have more to eat. Now, they are always expecting more, and are pessimistic. In total, yes.

In Switzerland the winter condition known as the "foehn" was so severe that you could not be arrested for a misdemeanor.Someone went cabin crazy and people just nodded and muttered "the foehn". Up until the modern invention of politically correct,it was taken as a fact of life that Northern Europeans were gloomy and Italians happy. Is this true?.From 5 years of living in Europe, mostly Switzerland,I would say yes. From my 3 week stay in Tahiti, and 5 visits to Hawaii,I would say that Polynesians are very happy people.
