What is eye tracking technology?

According to rumours, there will be an eye scanner for the next Samsung S5. Doesn't Samsung realise that its features look stupid (for example Air Gesture and Eye Tracking), and that nobody will actually use it?

  • To all those Samsung fanboys ranting on Apple's stupidity for placing a fingerprint sensor, which works perfectly and naturally, won't an eye scanner be just ridiculous?

  • Answer:

Next they will be adding a camera, those silly engineers. How is what Samsung doing any different to Nokia or Apple? The engineers look to see what capabilities can be added to the devices to enable the marketeers to differentiate their product from the competition. They have all had some wins and losses - cameras, fingerprint scanners and gps great, voice recognition, clippy and eye tracking, not so much.

When Nokia was putting a camera on their phones, everyone thought it was ridiculous. Now you can't sell a phone without a phone, even the cheapest ones. I would never give such a statement as you are doing. You are bound to be disproved in a few years when it's all the rage and everyone wants to operator their phone by doing gestures... oh wait, like with a kinect?

I understand what you are saying. Air gesture and eye tracking do "look ridiculous", but that's only because they don't work properly. Samsung's problem is quality control, not the idea. The idea of air gesture and eye tracking would both be awesome if they worked properly, but the reality is that they were poorly executed and not finished products when Samsung decided to go ahead and release them anyways. Also, I am 99% sure that Apple has patents on eye tracking as well so Samsung aren't the only "idiots" trying it. As for retina scanning for security purposes, it is a good idea. Just as good as Apple's fingerprint scanning, which again I'm pretty sure Apple agrees with because I believe they have also been researching retina scanning for security purposes. The problem is going to be whether or not Samsung can create a solid software product. Personally, I think it'll be a flop because I think they will screw it up by again releasing a product that is basically beta and acting like it's incredibly useful. Samsung is trying to be Apple. They try to come up with flagship features that really don't make or break the phone and then market them like the features are the God's gift to mankind. This is done by both companies. The problem is that Apple usually executes the feature very well whereas Samsung has no problem delivering a half finished piece of garbage (Apple has done this too. See "Apple Maps"). If Samsung can get their quality control together and truly finish retina scanning so that it works smoothly every time it's used then it'll be an awesome product just like Apple's fingerprint scanner. However, if they keep up with their current process it'll be doomed just like Air Gesture and Eye Tracking.

Whatever... samsung never tests any of its application wrt customer utility and usability.  I mean, i had an S3. The best of its time. It had given me so many unnessary which at that time used to look super awesomme !!! But just in a few months you will come to know that it utter useless. The only thing you can do with them is boast infront of ur friends !!! thats it. Thats the only time when i had used them.... pure crap !! The same thing is with s4(No i did not purchase it !!!). Air gesture, stupid camera modes, barometer  etc ... Samsung has to grow up! i think this retina scan of theirs will be an addition to above mentioned features.
