How can a seed-funded enterprise software startup borrow enterprise firewall appliances for testing?

    For Checkpoint VPN-1 you could also ask for SecurePlatform (Checkpoint's hardened Linux with VPN-1 software) ISO's and install them in a x86 box. There's a Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for SecurePlatform in http://www.checkpoint.com/services/techsupport/hcl/ that mainly applies to boxes that you want to use as gateways. I've never found any problem installing SecurePlatform in any x86 box (even under VMWare) to use it as the SmartConsole. Take into account that Checkpoint runs on some different hardware providers like Crossbeam, Nokia (security division now owned by Checkpoint itself), open box (any x86 machine compliant with the HCL) and also Checkpoint own hardware. If you want to test the hardware I'll go definitely for the Checkpoint/Nokia IP appliances running IPSO. For ASA, if you've got a CCO with enough privileges you can download the ASA IOS from Cisco's web and use it under a simulation environment called GNS3 (http://www.gns3.net/). Maybe it's not what you're looking for but it helps to evaluate the software itself.

We did this at Microsoft sometimes though it's much easier at Microsoft to borrow stuff for obvious reasons.
