What is the best pet insurance company in California?  Particularly for a family with multiple pets?

Some have benefit schedules or cover "reasonable and customary fees" which means they will only cover what the company sees as a reasonable cost for XYZ. If your veterinarian is more expensive, then you are left paying the difference which can be quite substantial in some cases. I would recommend reading through review sites to get a feel for actual customers' experiences. Also to get coverage specifically for accidents and illnesses (wellness coverage doubles premiums without adding value). A company may offer low premiums, but to control pricing, they have all kinds of limits (per-incident, per-year, per-claim, or benefits schedules) and minimum deductibles, so it's a matter of how much coverage you would like.
