A standout example is Sandra Day O'Connor, the former Supreme Court justice. She graduated from Stanford Law School in 1952 and practiced full-time as an attorney for about eight years afterward. Her three children were born between 1957 and 1962 ... and there are a variety of accounts of how she handled the competing demands of career and early parenting. The most carefully researched account appears in a 2009 http://www.amazon.com/Sandra-Day-OConnor-Joan-Biskupic-ebook/dp/B000UOJTSAof O'Connor written by Joan Biscupik, who covered the Supreme Court for The Washington Post. Biscupik (p. 31) says that in 1960, O'Connor chose to "stay home" for give years, when confronted with the triple challenges of her second son's birth, the departure of their main caregiver/babysitter, and an inability to find a proper replacement. It's noteworthy how much O'Connor accomplished professionally while she was staying home. She built up her Arizona political contacts considerably, becoming active in the Junior League (which mattered back then), as well as various Republican organizations, etc. She also kept a hand in law, drafting wills and serving as a bankruptcy trustee on cases that could be handled at home. After the children got a bit older, O'Connor resumed her legal/political career full time and went on to accomplish a lot. If anyone's keeping score on this sort of stuff, the marriage and the kids worked out fine, too. The Biscupik book puts everything in context quite skillfully.
