Why doesn't Aluminum form a smooth, mirror-like surface when polished using emery paper and then MgO for microscopy? What methods are commonly used to overcome this problem?

  • I'm referring to the pickup of particles from the paper onto the surface, resulting in a dull surface. (I know that kerosene is used to prevent this). Why does this happen? What other ways are there to prevent this?

Aluminum can be polished to a mirror finish. You need the right polishing compound. Lot of auto shops use this green colored polishing compound. You can get a mirror finish just by hand buffing.

1. You could try cleaning with a ultrasonic cleaner which gives a better surface after polishing with magnesia grinding media. 2. You could also try diamond paste after magnesia
