How do you save a drowning person/animal/child? How do you decide whether to attempt or not?

Once instinctively tried saving one, he would rather try drown me to gasp a breath. I almost got myself killed(cramped my leg), before we survived.

My main answer, unless the person is in water where you can touch bottom with head and shoulders out of the water (and even then it's pretty dicey) don't. It sounds cruel and cold, but without training it is insanely difficult rescuing people from water. Even WITH training it's very dangerous, and all other opportunities should be exhausted (reaching them with a pole, throwing them a device, or getting a boat out to them... remember reach, throw, row, go) before you go after them. When someone starts to drown, their automatic reflexes kick in (which will kill them) and they can't think straight. They'll look like they're trying to climb a ladder in water. They won't cry out because they're only focus is breathing air in when they can. If you get to them without knowing how to deal with them they'll climb up you. this is why reaching out with a pole or a hook works really well because they'll try to climb up it. Flotation devices aren't quite as useful because they'll try to climb up them. A drowning person cannot think, they can only act.

I believe that the YMCA teaches water safety courses. You should take the class before you need to use the skills. If you don't have a "Y" in your area, go to any public pool, find a lifeguard, and ask them where to find a class.

It's always good to help weaker people. I have purposefully highlighted "weaker". What I meant here is until and unless you feel yourself to be strong enough, you don't help people. Saving a drowning person when you are not sure about skills is only going to kill you both, rather working on your skills first would do for such experiences in future. Remember helping others is a good thing but when you can't, you just can't.

You need to be sure of your abilities. If you are weak swimmer or never tried diving to the bottom then best course of action is to scream for help and call 911.If you are good swimmer then check for potential hazards before diving in. It could be that the the person drowned because of electicution. I saved girlâs life last year and jumped into swimming pool without thinking but retrospectively i think it would have been safer to check if there is no electricity in water. Even tho im not sure what is safest way to do that. Stick my finger in water?
