Can the iphone be used on the verizon network?

Can anyone who has used the iPhone 4 on both AT&T and Verizon in NYC comment on his/her preferences (particularly network quality)?

  • Finally switching from BlackBerry to iPhone and trying to decide which network.

  • Answer:

Verizon is far superior in New York. I recently bought a new iPhone 4 S and decided to switch to Verizon from At&T (where I'd been a customer since the iPhone debut). I have lived in New York and had an iPhone nearly the entire time. So far, there is no question in my mind that Verizon offers superior service in New York City. My office is in Soho and I live in Brooklyn Heights. At work I was never been able to send text messages while on At&T and I was unable to make phone calls 50% of the time. At home, I could send text messages, however, the phone service was atrocious. Since I don't have a landline at home, having reliable voice service was something I really need. Since switching to Verizon I can send/receive text messages from both home and work --- and I can make calls at both locations without issue. Now the downside of my switch: 1) I lost my grandfathered 'unlimited data' plan 2) I pay slightly more per month 3) you can't use the web while making a call on Verizon. Point #1 was the most difficult for me to reconcile, however, I am mainly an email and web guy and rarely watch video or such on my phone. Point #2 I was willing to deal with for the benefit of superior reliability. Point #3 I figured was more of an outlier situation -- I could say, do a quick Google Maps lookup and then call someone back. In sum: If you already have good service with AT&T then there's probably no reason to switch. If like me, you've found yourself repeatedly frustrated in New York City by terrible service from AT&T and you don't mind not having unlimited data --- make the switch. Added Bonus: Since I was not eligible for the fully discounted iPhone price through AT&T, it was actually less expensive for me to cancel my existing AT&T plan and switch to Verizon.
