What is the history of Hyderabad?

Should anti national parties like MIM which supports Nizam rule and opposes Hyderabad liberation be banned in India?

Hyderabad MP and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said that September 17 has no significance as far as Deccan history is concerned; some vested interest forces have distorted the history to gain political power on the basis of spreading communal hatred among Muslims and Hindus in the name of Police Action. Is it not  a dangerous trend ?

  • Answer:

First of all, I <3 Sardar Patel. He did what Nehru couldn't/wouldn't do. Thanks to him, we don't have an official separate Muslim state in the middle of the India. Imagine the threat to the nation had this happened. Secondly, let's see the origin/positioning of MiM: Hyderabad state had been steadily becoming more theocratic since the beginning of the 20th century. In 1926, Mahmud Nawazkhan, a retired Hyderabad official, founded the Majlis-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (also known as Ittehad or MIM) in 1926. "Its objectives were to unite the Muslims in the State in support of Nizam and to reduce the Hindu majority by large-scale conversion to Islam". Source: Kate, P. V., Marathwada Under the Nizams, 1724-1948, Delhi: Mittal Publications, 1987, p.73 Let's look at the demographics: As per 1941 census, the State of Hyderabad under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osman_Ali_Khan,_Asaf_Jah_VII, (1911 and 1948) comprised of a population of roughly 16.34 million people (as per the 1941 census) of which a majority (85%) was Hindu. What are the objectives of MiM these days, I don't know exactly but hearing the speeches made by them I am afraid not much has changed. History lesson: Hyderabad was a princely state ruled by the Nizams. Hyderabad wanted to be independent in 1947. Communal Hindu-Muslim riots in Hyd pending the imminent partition of India Fearing a Hindu civil uprising in Hyd, the Nizam +  MiM Party set up a voluntary militia of Muslims called the 'Razakars'. The Razakars swore to uphold Islamic domination in Hyderabad and the Deccan plateau in the face of growing public opinion amongst the majority Hindu population favouring the accession of Hyderabad into the Indian Union. Violence between the Razakars and Hindu communities with more than 150 villages (of which 70 were in Indian territory outside Hyderabad State) were pushed into violence. The Nizam of Hyderabad started arming the state. Its army included mercenary forces: Arabs,Rohillas, North Indian Muslims, Pathans and Razakars. They received arms supply from Pakistan. Hyderabad's prime minister Laik Ali stated "India thinks that if Pakistan attacks her, Hyderabad will stab her in the back. I am not so sure we would not." Sardar Patel responded later by stating "If you threaten us with violence, swords will be met with swords" Indian Police and army squadrons sent for investigation attacked by Razakars Indian army receives orders from the Indian govt to seize and annexe Hyderabad. From 13th Sept to 17th Sept 1947, a battle of sorts took place and on 17th Spet ceasefire was announced. Isn't this just the thing we should celebrate! As an Indian, it is the victory of my nation over disruptive forces. As a hindu, it is victory over Hindus' impending death/conversion. MiM's ask for ignoring the Liberation Day, is suggestive of their allegiance against India hasn't changed. (To the philosophy of hyd being a muslim state). Isn't this sedition? If yes, they should be banned legally. If no, they should be banned for communisation. About TRS, I have given up trying to figure out their logic in most of the things. Waiting for the next state elections.  If possible, ban them too.

Kasim Razvi History is subjective in nature and facts are always distorted. Before we can say Massacre.  People should consider backdrop of  Telangana History and persecution of other religions by Nizam for 400years  . There is no rule of law or anything to protect Majority from Nizam and there masters. Telugu culture is totally destroyed , women were rapped and Enslaved for generations by Nizam and his vassals. This things created  hatred between two communities as every person effected by Nizam men in villages. Things turned much bitter when Nizam and Razakars said they will keep Hyderabad state either Independent or merge with Pakistan against  Majority wishes. Razakars under  leadership of Kasim razvi started large scale Hindu conversions to reduce them into minority. Razakar militia brutally put down the armed revolts by  Communists and the Peasantry and committed horrendous atrocities on the Hindu population and even eliminated patriotic Hyderabad Muslims such as Shoebullah Khan who advocated merger with India. Here we should consider two things . 1. This things made hurted majority people  of deeply  and all villages are divided into pro-Nizam(Razakars) and Anti -Nizam (communists)  and bitter struggle taking place  between to groups who are killing each long before Operation Polo  Razakar’s storm trooper style tactics. While there is some amount of truth in that, the  fact is that the Razakars were the Nizam’s own creation,  or as some one put it his “Frankenstein creation”.  To understand the genesis of the Razakars, one needs to go back further to the Telangana rebellion, that broke out in 1946. For a long time, the rural parts of Hyderabad State, were divided into what was called as Samsthanams, essentially pieces of feudal territories, under the oppresive rule of the Reddy, Velama doras in Telangana, the Deshmukhs in other regions, who ran a brutal and often oppressive rule. They owned most of the land, and collected the taxes from the poor peasantry, and keeping them in perpetual bonded labor( called as Vetti Chakiri).  These landlords were the masters of their own land, and had a good bonding with the Nizam and his nobles. The Nizam on the other hand, hardly had any control over these lands, and let the Doras run it as per their own free whims, it was pretty much a quid pro quo arrangement. It was an unlikely person, who would spark off the Telangana revolt, a doughty woman activist called Chakali Illamma, who fought against the local Zamindar’s attempt to take over 4 acres of her land. That sparked off a revolt all over Telangana, with the communists jumping into the fray, and liberating many villages from the feudal lords. There was another reason too for the simmering discontent, in spite of the fact that Hindus constituted 85% of the population in Hyderabad State as per 1941 census, with Muslims making up 12%, they were severely under represented in the Government.  The Army had 1268 Muslim officers and only 421 Hindu officers, in a strength of 1765,  most of the highly paid officers were Muslim, and the Nizam and his nobles owned 40% of the land. Faced with growing discontent,  and also the fear of a Hindu uprising, the Nizam gave a free hand to Qasim Rizvi to set up the Razakars,to counter it. The Razakars unleashed a reign of terror in Hyderabad State, with their storm-trooping acts. Villages were attacked in the middle of night, and after rounding the mostly Hindu residents up, they were massacred en masse. There have been eye witness accounts from some villagers, who managed to escape the Razakar’s by playing dead, often having to lie still on a pile of corpses. In some cases, the villagers fled to the nearest jungle or one of the numerous uninhabited mud forts to escape the Razakars. Rape, arson, torture, looting, were common tactics by the Razakars to intimidate the population. Much as the Nizam later protested he was a mere pawn, in the hands of the Razakars, the fact is that he was responsible for funding them, and also providing them arms.  It was a Frankenstein he had created, with encouragement from Jinnah, Qasim Rizvi soon became more powerful than the Nizam.  He was not just against Hindus, even those Muslims who did not favor integration with Pakistan, and wanted to be a part of India were targeted And above all, you had Qasim Rizvi, the Razakar’s  chief, who declared that  if  India  were to attack Hyderabad ” Nothing but the bones and ashes of 10.5 million Hindus would be found”.   Sardar Patel categorically replied back “If you threaten us with violence, swords will be met with swords 2. Though Indian Army has planned and Executed Operation Polo in  best way. But GoI doesn't have men, bureaucracy or any communication lines to run Hyderabad state immediately after annexation. Total bureaucracy machinery is collapsed and failed  to control Hyderabad State which  has 16 districts, comprising nearly 22,000 villages at that time  to dispel  riots It would be better called Riots due to  FAILURE OF STATE MACHINERY  rather than State sponsored  Massacre In fact most riots took place in . Osmanabad, Gulburga, Bidar and Nanded   the main strongholds of Razakars and the people of these four districts had been the worst sufferers at the hands of the Razakars There are instances at some places where Men in uniform supported the Hindus, but these small instances where this men later subjected to court martial .It should also be considered  Army also not free from communal feelings at that time  probably because some of them could not forget the atrocities committed elsewhere on their own kith and kin. Pandit Sunderlal committee which studied riots after math operation Polo commented  " Indian Army and its officers in Hyderabad generally maintained a high standard of discipline and sense of duty. In General Choudhri we found a man without any tinge of communal prejudice, a firm disciplinarian and thorough gentleman It should be celebrated because from that we Telangana people breathing free air , with granted rights by constitution free from Hitler brothers like Razhvi remembering Martyrs who laid there life so that we can be part of GREAT COUNTRY called INDIA  For me " Nothing in the whole world is valuable than FREEDOM and it is not for  granted".  Indian Army , Peasents and communists sacrificed so much to this happen

If you believe that whatever India has done till date is correct just because it is India, please stop reading here. I respect what you would most likely think is patriotism; good bye. If you believe, however, that India, as a nation is not perfect, has committed mistakes, and most importantly,if you have the tolerance to understand the "other" perspective, please read on. I absolutely oppose 's answer where she begins by assuming that a Muslim state would have been a huge threat to India. India has had few or no problems with Maldives, for example, which has more than a 99% Muslim population. I agree Maldives isn't "in the middle of India", but that doesn't invalidate the point that India and Islam cannot get along together. But I wouldn't want to digress by pointing out the innumerable flaws, distortions, misrepresentations, misinterpretations and misquotations that have been spread about the Nizam. (A highly upvoted answer on Quora says an absolutely false story about the Nizam throwing a shoe at Madan Mohan Malviya because His Exalted Highness didn't want to donate to a Hindu University (BHU), whereas, history bears witness that the Nizam donated 10 lakh rupees to the BHU while just 5 lakh rupees to the AMU citing the difference in population among his subjects) But let's get to the crux. Why didn't Hyderabad celebrate it's liberation Day? What exactly did you want Hyderabadis to celebrate? That lakhs of innocent people were massacred on that day and the days preceding that? That dozens of mosques were desecrated? That hundreds of girls were raped? That homes of influential nobles were looted by the soldiers of the Indian Army themselves? Or wait.. Maybe it is that you want Hyderabad to celebrate its liberation day because the King who built universities, hospitals, banks, courts, railways, airports, mints, bus fleets, (and yes, mosques and temples!), for his subjects, was dethroned? That the richest state in the Indian subcontinent, has since then, been on a relatively perennial decline when compared to the fairy tale-like riches it once had? Or perhaps,.. That the people who suffered never received justice? That the Indian government, till date, has not declassified the report made by the Sree Krishna Commission as to what happened during the "Police Action"? That the so called "Police Action" was actually military action? That the Nizam was pressurized to withdraw his complaint made to the United Nations? The point I'm trying to make, is that there was nothing much "liberating" about the Liberation Day. Many Hyderabadis do not even know such a thing existed. Am I a Hyderabadi? Yes. Are we Indians? Yes. Are we proud Indians? Yes. Are we blind to India's mistakes? No. Would we shut our eyes to any atrocities committed in the name of nationality? No. What happened to us was nothing short of an attempted genocide. I know this wouldn't arouse the same sympathy like it does for the Jews or closer home, like it does for the Sikhs who suffered in 1984. I can't help but feel that this lack of empathy is because a lot of people among my Hindu brethren have much contempt for Muslims, and they fail to see the scenario of Hyderabad from any other perspective than a religious one. But what makes me glad is that we survived. The Hyderabadi culture wasn't defeated. Dynasties come and go, but culture should remain. It makes absolutely no sense to celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day. It is along the same lines of asking Sikhs to celebrate the attack on the Golden Temple.

I guess you are not aware of stark realities about the city of Hyderabad. All information you had was some statements made by Owaisi family. 1. Owaisi family were the Nizams that were ruling Hyderabad state before this so called Liberation happened. How will your Ex girl friend feel when you invite her to your anniversary...same to same. 2. Development in some of the areas in Old city area of Hyderabad has been slow for many years but slowly these days neo liberal middle class is emerging. its still conservative but tide is slowly turning with more focus on education 3. Think of this way why was congress so invested in providing reservations even for socially strong Jat community in Haryana because to make people happy, same is the case for MIM because its target audience are demanding these actions. 4. All the Owaisis ever wanted is power. They never want to secede from India and by being Nizam family convincing them can ensure peace in the city because people will blindly follow them. 5. Until 2004 no Non-congress party has completed full term in office, so if India can believe in a dynasty why not Hyderabad after all it is part of India. Likely scenario upon banning AIMIM will be people in Hyderabad will get hurt because remember these were democratically elected people. There are much more radical ideologies that are there which will take over. Tried to be politically correct. So, assume at will. Please don't stereotype.

Are you from Hyderabad? I'm from hyderabad and I've never heard of liberation/merger day. Why spend millions on a day which also marks the death of thousands. And speaking of Nizam's rule in Hyderabad, he spent more on Hindu temples than Masjids more on hindu development than muslim's development just because there were more hindus in his kingdom than muslims.
