If women wear makeup for themselves and not necessarily to please men or other people, why don't they wear makeup at home?

I don't believe this however this is what someone said to me and it made me think! * EDIT: sorry, I didn't get quite what I was after - maybe I worded it incorrectly as I was in a rush! I am a woman and I believe I wear makeup for myself - to which someone else said to me, you get ready to go in public yet when you have a day off you don't just put makeup on - which is true! I don't like to wear makeup at home alone because I want my skin to breathe and feel fresh. Yes there are occasions where I play with makeup but generally, I don't wear makeup at home. I think it is safe to say we do present ourselves better when in public, there is no denying that. They then implied I wore makeup to impress others. I was stumped and wanted a come back! However I guess my answer is that I wear makeup in public to boost my own confidence, to make myself feel good in social situations - but not to impress others! I don't know, I feel like my answer to their assumptions was weak! But I definitely don't wear makeup to impress others! I know a lot of you have already answered without my description but if anyone else has any other insight please answer :)

Answer:
I rarely wear makeup. When I do, I'd say about a tenth of the time I put it on just for fun and never leave the house. Below are some pics of times I've done makeup, and no one saw it but me: I paint my nails sometimes just for myself: And play with my hair: (Ok, I admit, the rest of my class saw this one^, but couldn't resist including it) And play with my friends' hair: And regardless of if anyone else will see it, when I do makeup, hair, clothes, nails, etc., I do it for me. Because I enjoy it and I like how it looks. No other reason. Re: Question Detail Edits: Makeup is functional, as well as aesthetic. The fact that you only do something around other people does not mean you do it 'to impress or please' them. For example, Most men wear pants in certain contexts, and not in others. Many of them, in fact, take joy in NOT wearing pants at home; but that does not mean that would never choose to wear pants if that choice was available, or that they are wearing pants only for others.

I, personally don't wear makeup at all outside the house excepts on big events ( weddings, graduations,...), but when I do, I do it out of something of a social obligation ( my mom). I do, however, have fun with make up at home occasionally as I think of it as non-toxic paint! For those who do wear makeup in public though, I know it is to boost their confidence. According to people i know, it is generally not to impress others, although i'm sure thats non non-existent either.

I put makeup on at home for two reasons: 1) I want to practice and perfect the technique so it won't take me ages to put my make up on before going out. I also want my makeup to look good enough that people can't tell I'm wearing anything. 2) Figure out if I like the look and would wear it out in public. I also wear make up for myself rather than for other people. I simply enjoy looking good and feel more confident when I feel 'put together.'

I wear makeup at home and out in public. Sometimes I wear prom-style makeup for a day at home watching gossip girl and beauty gurus. Makeup is fun and I love playing around with it.

I have skin imperfections and an uneven skin tone so I do wear make up but I also love it as well just because I can always amplify my beauty for special occasions. However there are such things as too much make up for example contouring on a regular basis and bright eye shadows with falsies too frequent definitely screams attention and you could get looked at the wrong way even if you mean well. I feel make up should and if you wear it regularly it should look as natural as possible and my concealer and bronzer is a must. I really don't care if someone feels like I am trying to impress others by putting on my "MASK" it makes me happy and I am going to continue to wear my make up :)

when you wear makeup for yourself it is to feel comfortable in your own skin. yes this means around others, but not for others. When we are in social situations we want to be confident and pretty - at home this doesn't matter. also makeup isn't good for your skin.

My mother wears make up in the house. And i wear make up for me but for people too! And well, for girls maybe ! (I'm gay) make up is so much fun. I love playing with it. And i love to see an enhaced version of myself.

Makeup is an art form. It is fun to craft a beautiful work of art out of my clothing, shoes, accessories and makeup, and then to enjoy it for myself and to see how others react to it. It is a particularly expressive type of art, because it is contextual. Part of the pleasure is keeping up with evolving fashions, and matching your art to the background or event. You dress differently for a wedding than a barbecue, and the stickiest situations, like "business casual" are the most fun if you can exactly nail it! Just like any artist, I do it for my own enjoyment, and also for the enjoyment of others. Many days (especially when I am at home) I need to just be functional, and I don't take the time for makeup. But when I am feeling artistic, and especially if there is an event to attend, makeup and fashion are a fun way to express myself.

Many of us do. In airports, I have women in full burqa in the bathroom adorn themselves in full makeup, and then cover their faces with a burqa. Clearly, these women are wearing the makeup for themselves.

I don't wear make up at home but I wear night cream as treatment for my oily skin. I wear make up outside to increase my confidence. Actually, I can't go outside without at least put on lipstick or something for eyebrow. If I don't wear make up, I will lose my confidence and become quiet. And this also happens for all my friends
