What is the history behind the various names in Delhi, like the ones mentioned below?
-
HAUZ KHAS - The name Hauz Khas is derived from the words âHauzâ: âwater tankâ (or lake) and âKhasâ:âroyalâ- the âRoyal tankâ. It was part Delhi Sultanate of Allauddin Khilji Dynasty. The large water TANK or reservoir was first built by Khilji to supply water to the ROYAL inhabitants of Siri. SIRI FORT - Siri (head) Fort was attacked by Monglolian invadors during its construction. Alauddin Khilji (Delhi ruler during 13th century) defeated them and eight thousand Mongols heads were built into the walls of the fort - hence it is rather a macabre name 'Siri' from the Hindi for 'head'. JANTAR MANTAR - the name is the spoilt version of 'Yantra Mantra' which means 'Instruments and Formulae'. This monument consists of 13 architectural astronomy instruments, built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur, from 1724 onwards, and is one of five built by him, as he was given by Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah the task of revising the calendar and astronomical tables. Mehrauli â The name Mehrauli is attributed to Mehrawali Mai (Mehr means Blessings), whose temple is right next to Bhool Bhulaiyya (Adam Khan's Tomb), as you enter mehrauli.

Answer:
Dhaula Kuan was named because of the ancient water well in the area that has white-colored sand. Chandni Chowk was a market shaped as a square and was given a further dash of elegance by the presence of a pool in the center of the complex which shimmered in the moonlight, a feature which was perhaps responsible for the nomenclature of the marketplace

Chawri (bazaar) Originating from the word chawhat, Sanskrit for a place where four roads meet, Chawri was a district for courtesans. Young men from noble families learnt the arts of poetry, paan and love from the dancing courtesans. At some point the pleasure district moved elsewhere, and Chawri Bazaar was transformed into a marketplace for copper, brass and paper products. The shopkeepers call it Indiaâs biggest centre for wedding cards. The metro station nearby is, at 30m (98ft) below ground level, Delhiâs deepest. Khari Baoli KHARI menas salty and Baoli means stepwell. Accordingly there used to be a khari baoli ( salty stepwell ) in thearea, but we can not find any structural evidence of it. Foundations of the Khari Baoli step-well were laid by Khwaja Abdullah Laazar Qureshi during the reign of Islam Shah (Salim Shah), the son of Sher Shah Suri. The work on this building was completed in the year 1551. Nothing remains of this baoli now, save copies of inscriptions that were preserved in works like Aasar Us Sanadeed (Sir Syed Ahmad Khan) and Miftah Al Tawarikh. Mandi House I am not sure about its origin but this place may have got its name because of the presence of Himachal Bhawan in the area. Mandi is a district in the H.P., India.
