Why does Microsoft not create Android apps?
-
Microsoft seems happy to create IOS apps for their products, and of course they create Windows Phone apps too, but they seem reluctant to create Android apps. Considering that Android is over half of the smartphone market, why is this the case? As far as I can tell, the only (major) app that Microsoft have (as at May 2012) is their Hotmail app.

Answer:
Firstly, One Note has been released recently. Many folks have voiced their delight and are considering reverting to it instead of Evernote. Secondly, the old adage of 'Many versions of Android make developing Apps hard' comes into play. Microsoft also has integration in mind and do not want a fragmented experience. Its easier therefore to get apps out to iOS rather than rush out to the Playstore and have older versions unsupported or an app that just breaks. Heck, even Chrome is getting flak for being on Ice Cream Sandwich only. It looks like MS is delegating development duties to 'partners' http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_live/b/windowslive/archive/2012/02/07/connect-your-android-device-to-skydrive-with-onenote-and-other-apps.aspx I also note that Office and Outlook are already fairly well supported with third party apps (Rocksync, Office Pro, Documents to Go comes to mind). So why kill themselves reinventing the wheel?

You have to consider that "Microsoft" does not develop things, groups within Microsoft develop things. Microsoft has had Apple software group(s) for a very long-time (Office for Mac, etc). I'd imagine iOS development has grown from those roots. I don't believe the same holds true for Linux and Java. I believe most stuff in that area previously was outsourced. I could be wrong, but it would make sense. Just speculation, I haven't worked there since 2001.

You can build apps for Android, iOS, and Windows devices by using Visual Studio. As you design your app, use tools in Visual Studio to easily add connected services such as Office 365, Azure Mobile Services, and Application Insights.Build your apps by using C# and the .NET Framework, HTML and JavaScript, or C++. Share code, strings, images, and in some cases even the user interface itself. Read More, http://www.velociters.com
