What are your favorite places to visit in Vienna?

    I may be unlike other tourists. When I'm in a place, I like to read literature or novels with the place I'm in as the setting for the story. So, when in Delphi, I read The Odyssey of Homer. Etc. My favorite place to visit in all of Vienna -- and favorite thing to do there for hours on end -- is to go to many shops in the old part of town and collect ingredients while trying to speak to shopkeepers; then, picnic assembled, to sit on a sunny bank of the Danube Canal in the old part of town with a picnic (must haves: bread, chocolate, oranges and wine), reading. I read lots of Freud, just like that, looking up every once in awhile and marveling at the beauty of the place.

I liked riding the subways, lol, and having the wonderful experience of seeing flowers for sale and snacks like hotdogs that are slipped into a whole roll and shops. My sister lived near Vienna for several years so when I visited her we only took short visits because her son was in school. My most memorable visit was of the catacombs at St. Stephens. Other than that we went to places outside of Vienna like Melk along the Danube. I agree with Nan the Danube canal was lovely.

A couple of brand new "must-sees" in Vienna are - the campus of the University of Economics and Business near the Prater (take the subway U2 to Prater/Messe). Stunning modern architecture, be sure to check out the library. - the Vienna DC Tower which is the highest skyscraper in Vienna (subway U1 to Vienna Internation Center). Take a drink on floor 58 and enjoy the view.
