How do I save changes on a bootable Opensuse linux USB stick I made?
-
The USB stick boots, but I want to save changes. When I turn off and turn the computer back on, all the settings and programs I installed are gone.

Answer:
Assuming that you followed one of the methods suggested by openSUSE wiki http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick to create a live USB from your Mac, all you need to do is add an extra command kiwi_hybridpersistent=yes at the initial boot prompt (Kernel load option) and it will find the persistant file and load it or create it outside the protected area and maintain it with settings when used. Alternatively, If you have an access to a linux machine, format your USB drive with FAT32 filesystem and follow the method using the dd command as suggested by the same wiki page and it will create a USB with persistent storage automatically using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy-on-write filesystem.

Warning: In most cases, you wouldn't want to do that. Live CD previews are meant for trial purpose and reside in the system RAM. They are not designed to replace your actual on disk OS and you will be limited in term of disk space and performance. If you still want to do this, you have to have a tool to create a dedicated space on the USB drive for persistence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Live_USB_creator does this on Ubuntu. There might be equivalent tools for OpenSuse which I'm not aware of. Someone from OpenSuse community can elaborate. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ too supports persistence but also on Ubuntu as of now. If you use Windows,http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ is an awesome tool to create persistent (any) Linux bootable USB drive. If you run out of luck with all these, I'll suggest using Ubuntu. It's very well tested and supported with all such tools. PS: I haven't elaborated on the complete process since I'm assuming you already know how to create a bootable USB stick.
